What would the AFFers recommend for a very nice dinner for an anniversary? For a couple who don't like degustation menus, amouses-bouche or anything pretentious...just good food and good wine..I have heard 1889 Enoteca is good?

I am a Bretts Wharf fan and will be sad to see it close at the end of the year!

Bretts Wharf

If you visiting its a nice citycat ride from/to the city if you allow the time.

1889 Enoteca can get a bit noisy, so not perfect for an anniversary dinner. Great wine list though!

Ecco is always a great choice, but again can be quite noisy. Philip Johnson's style as a chef is great produce cooked perfectly with minimal fuss. The same could be said for Montrachet.

Baguette is always a great standby for a romantic dinner. I'll admit to a certain bias there I had my wedding reception there, and have done a few anniversary dinners ourselves.

Most other suggestions would be a bit more "fine-dining", but would be happy to throw many more out there.

I cant help a lot here, but Bretts Warehouse At River Front is good, but I have had some GREAT meals at Mt Ommany (however its spelled) Motor lodge (yep - motor lodge). Their Chef should be working for a 3 hat restaurant. Be prepared for steep prices, but V good quality

I love Ecco. If you want to take it down a notch Agave is lovely.
PS Forgot my fav place - Alchemy! Adore that place.

We love "The Walnut Room" at Royal On The Park...always do anniversaries and often birthdays there. You can go al la carte, or the sensational seafood buffet if you are so inclined - both a great.

Do I know you (looking at Avatars)?

Adding to the good but not too pretentious list:

Lure (Coro Hotel), Il Centro (eagle St) and wilsons boathouse (portside). Belgian beer cafe is good but noisy. Urbane in Mary St city was really good the other night and surprisingly well priced!

The restaurant at Sirromet Winery is excellent too (name escapes me - is it Lurleen?). The (local) wine is terrible, but they have (interstate) alternatives and the foods fantastic.

rechoboam,
I notice you are from Adelaide. Where are you staying in Brisbane and what is your means of travel.

On Saturday evening, I went to a restaurant at Camp Hill - Cinco www.cincobistro.com

Not far from the city. Bit noisy. good food.

Also recommend Montrechet at Paddington.

I always wanted to try Ecco. Last time, a friend tried to make a booking and was told nothing. I then walked past it that evening (around 7-ish), and it was mostly empty...!

I'd also try Two.

Been a while since l dinned BNE, but l like;

Ecco (nice food, can get pricey)
Montrachet (nice food, great wine list)
Customs House (for the view (mainly summer) and ok food)
Bretts Wharf (only had lunch, so can't comment on dinner)

Thanks for the tips. Don't know where I'm staying or any other details just yet. We stayed in the Melbourne Sofitel and were pleasantly surprised. I'm moving away from big chain hotels though more and more.

Be aware that Montrachet is only open for dinner Mon-Thurs nights. I haven't been there yet, I'm really looking forward to trying it!
I can't think of any other restaurants to add to the list you've been given already. :)

Jade Bhudda on Eagle St Pier is pretty decent, not too over the top. Asian Fusion type place, great view of the story bridge at night.

As well as Ecco, I would add Restaurant Two (but could be a bit too posh) and my current favourite, the Buffalo Club. If you're prepared to go for the minimalist surrounds and let the food and wine speak for itself, then Anise.

Euro is interesting, but the dishes can be a bit hit and miss - some stunning, some 'what were they thinking'.

I would suggest, in order:

Tank
Euro
Ecco
Green Papaya (East Brisbane)

Happy anniversary and bon appetite!

Tank gets my vote. Is Modern Australian mixed with Japanese.

If it is steak that you want then go for Char Char Grill on Eagle street.

Also worth a look is Era in South Brisbane.

Have a great night.

Must give Tank a try myself!
