Hi,

Planning on flying adelaide/singapore return in october and doing some sums (considering J both ways with JASA, Classic or trying my luck with upgrades). Here's my question: Is there anyway I can tell the booking class (when booking JASA or $ only) when looking at flights? The reason I ask is that to upgrade Y to J costs 15,000 points if its from a full (Y) economy ticket but 24,000 from discount economy (BGHKLMS & V). At 24,000 it doesn't seem like great value given a classic award economy is 25,000 in Y and 50,000 in J. I'll take my chances if it's only 15,000 but on all the various fares I can find the conditions only state that upgrades are available but only mentions that the ticket is considered discount economy for points accrual and status purposes. When it says this does it also mean for upgrade purposes?

Hope someone can help!

Thanks, interesting reading, but really only confirmed that without farting around you can't, what a pain. The thing is the conditions clearly state if they are or aren't upgrade-able but not if they are considered discount or full fare. Interestingly not one fare available for adl/sin says that points accrual is at full economy. Weird. It's a pity upgrading discount economy flights is such poor value, especially given you can't tell when you first book your flights what fare type you're getting. grrrrrrr.

yes, and it seems that red-e-deals to Europe are often/always upgradeable and those to USA are rarely if ever upgradeable. Complicating the choice. I find it infuriating. Hence I have laid off the next trip to USA to the travel agent. Lazy I know.

To get a Y fare you basically need to use a TA or call Qantas to book.

This can get costly as often Y fares can be more expensive than some PE/Business fares for the same route.
