Wow.
This is a significant date for me. The first prime minister I remember the name of in my lifetime was Malcolm Fraser, but while he was prime minister I was too young to understand politics and follow what our leaders were doing. Bob Hawke was the first Prime Minister who I remembered for what he did and said. Of course, I'm probably remembering all the larrikin things he got up to.

I remember him after the America's Cup. I think he played cricket in the Prime Ministers 11 in Canberra but I could be remembering another exhibition match. I remember him being on "A Country Practice" visiting Jo Loveday. I also saw him at a polling booth as I happened to live in his electorate at the time. He walked past me and waved. I remember a huge bus being there which I eventually realised was the press bus following him around. There are many other things I remember but too many to mention here. There were things I liked about him and others which I objected to. Even though there have been lots of prime ministers since Bob, he's the one I remember most clearly.

I also lived in the electorate of Wills and got to vote for him as well. What a small world!

I also know the current incumbent of the Wills electorate having worked with him briefly many years ago.

Definitely a small world. At one stage during the turmoil after Bob Hawke resigned I knew the family of Kelvin Thomson, who regained the seat for Labor after the independent Phil Cleary lost. My family also knew the family of Christine Campbell who took over the state seat of Pascoe Vale after Kelvin swapped from State parliament to Federal parliament.

Front page of The Australian tomorrow is dedicated to Bob Hawke. They agree with my larrikin description. "From larrikin to legend" is the heading I saw on my front page preview.

Bob Hawke went to Perth Modern School in Perth so I always paid attention to him seeing that was my school.
When he lived in Sandringham his near neighbours could hear domestics between Hazel and Bob and they weren’t even next door.
