BNE -> SYD -> LAX. Will my luggage get checked-through without intervention?

Due to Qantas issues, I'm flying BNE -> SYD -> LAX (as opposed to BNE to LAX direct) in July. Both flights are with Qantas and are on the one booking/eTicket. I had assumed that my luggage would get checked-through from BNE all the way to LAX with no intervention from myself, but Qantas' "Baggage with connecting flights" page states:

For customers travelling to:
  • YVR - All customers with Domestic and International connections must collect their luggage and take to the transfer area.
  • LAX & SFO - All customers with Domestic and International connections must collect their luggage and take to the transfer area.
  • DFW - All customers with Domestic USA connections transferring to other airlines must collect their luggage and take to the transfer area. International connections will be transferred automatically.
This makes it sounds like my luggage in fact won't be checked-through from BNE to LAX, but rather I have to do something with them in SYD? Can anyone advise if this is a correct interpretation of the above? Thanks!

Hi @goldinthemhills, and congratulation on your first post.

Your bag will be checked from BNE to LAX via SYD and you will not need to collect it in Sydney. The reference you note is for passengers with onward travel beyond LAX, where all passengers must collect their bags upon arrival at LAX after immigration processing, then clear customs with their checked bags. Then if you have an onward domestic or international flight from LAX you must re-check your bag at a transfer or check-in area.

Thank you @NM - for both the advice and the greeting!

Which by the way is the same policy in Australia, so the return journey will only be checked as far as SYD.

Just to note that the bits you've bolded are all for connections in those countries (ie Canada and USA) and not about SYD so as others have said your bag(s) will be though checked to LA without incident.
