Bankwest Qantas Transaction account [being withdrawn in 2025]

Anyone else tried to open another BW account and got the "P1ss off mate" message?
i haven't been able to find them with a quick search (the Bankwest thread is just too long to go back through) but I recall multiple people being rejected by Bankwest for other products with the reasoning given being due to an unsatisfactory previous banking relationship or something like that.

So yeah, they do seem to hold a grudge. Thankfully it is a bit player and pretty easy to avoid them

I just tried today, 9 years later to open a Bankwest account and they basically said I'm ineligible. I 100% bet I have a black mark against my name. Anyone else tried to open another BW account and got the "P1ss off mate" message?
Which type of account? The Bankwest Qantas Transaction account ceased being a thing on 31st Aug; anyone who had one was converted to a regular transaction account that doesn't earn points.

Pretty sure since they announced the plan to discontinue they removed the ability to apply for this account type, so rejection could be as simple as you applying for an invalid account type.

Im assuming there will be one last deposit of QFF points for the period up to 31st Aug. Im goin to consider the new AMP points earning account as a replacement for this one.

I’ve tried a few times over the years with the same outcome each time. First tried a credit card in maybe 2018 and was rejected. I called and asked why and was told because of the BW QF transaction account festivities and “maybe” I’d be ok to try after 5 years. Anyway that advice didn’t seem to help as the one or two times I’ve since tried to open a transaction account I wasn’t even able to get past the verify ID stage.

Last bunch of FF points dropped thursday, time to reducedthe txn account balance to $1; and move deposits I was making elsewhere with higher interest and/or points.

Will keep the txn as a back up for international travel just popping funds there when travelling. Still prefer Macquarie for travelling as their app is the best.

I got the last points too and I will start moving my funds to higher accounts as well

I’m in the same boat although I never tried for their cc, I did try and get a transaction account when they had a points bonus a while ago. Pretty much failed to get anywhere past the ID process.

Yep, mine gone too.
I'll still hang on to it for international withdrawals due to no foreign exchange fee.
The QF points were a nice little earner but alas, it is no more.
I thought about the AMP or Qudos accounts but there rates seem lower than this one.

The points game is getting harder (factoring this in with the destruction of VA's status earn, recent "enhancements" by QF, upcoming ones with SQ, and Amex, reduction in transfer partners with CBA, QF thinking about making status harder to achieve, and the very likely potential annihilation that will come after the RBA changes come into effect next year).

Is the rate same as spot?
ie. this can fulfil the void for the orphaned Citi plus debit card, which became NAB Classic, which NAB have removed the fee free option for foreign ATM withdrawals (starting 5 November 2025).

I have had no interaction with Bankwest since the good old days of automatically making 100 x 1 cent payments per day to Telstra split between my regular and platinum debit cards on my Bankwest Qantas Transaction Account (think it was 2016 when they sacked me as a customer) until last month. Applied for a Bankwest Qantas World Mastercard last month and got auto knocked back "as it doesn't meet our current lending criteria". We do have a fair bit of investment property debt in addition to debt on PPOR, so that is probably the reason why.

About to sell one of those properties which will allow me to retire that debt as well as the debt on my PPOR, so going to try with Westpac then. Might come back and try Bankwest again late 2026.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with spot?

The main thing thing that I'll keep the card for is for any potential cash withdrawals overseas. As it uses the standard Mastercard currency conversion rate (unless that has changed since June), it's easy to keep track of how many AUD will be used.

Thanks. Good to know.
Spot is the "official" conversation rate at the time.
Some cards don't charge a fee, but use a worse conversation rate - which is to their benefit and adds to their profit.

Community Service announcement to anyone who had the Bankwest Qantas Transaction account and planned to just keep on using the replacement Easy Transaction account.

I received a letter yesterday from Bank West stating they cancelled (not suspended) my debit card for not being used for 12 months; even though the linked transaction account has had deposits and withdrawals every month and the card was still valid for another 3 years.

There was no warning that debit card would be cancelled, the letter was dated 3rd Sept but only arrived yesterday (17 Sept) and the post mark on the envelope shows it was only mailed on 12th Sept. Further the letter says to request a new card via the app, something which is only possible in online banking and not via the app.

Spoke with online agent. They said card was cancelled due to end of Qantas account, and that if I had been using my card regularly (as opposed to the account it was linked to) then I would have automatically been sent a replacement BUT because Id not made a çash withdrawal nor a purchase using the physical card in the last 12months, it was deemed I did not require a physical card.

A pain bcause its a 10 day wait for a new card (luckily Im not going overseas in that period), as the only time I ever use a physical debit card is when Im travelling overseas. In Australia I have zero need for cash or debit card; as everything here can be paid by credit card or paypal or direct deposit online.

I have gone into app and ordered a new card this evening but have been advised that its up to me to ensure I use the physical card if I dont want to see it cancelled again within 12 months, and it is not their policy to warn you. Also that BankWest can only reactive a card if its been less than 5 days since it was cancelled (if you find out in time).

So if you didnt use your Bank West debit often its worth checking it hasnt been cancelled.

I did receive the replacement card in the mail before the shut down of the Qantas account- but did not know they would not send cards to people… very informative for many people
