Bangkok shutdown

This afternoon there is a large group of demonstrators at Chit Lom. That BTS station there and at Ploenchit are closed. Traffic on road is so slow.

Watching this thread with interest now to see if a long weekend in hua hin is viable...all tours from HK have been cancelled so cx flights have opened up with lots of discount Y availability during the holiday weekend coming next week

CX are cancelling 2 to 3 flights a day (in advance). usually one of the first and the 2 last or so. If you book a flight that's connecting onwards to somewhere like Colombo/Karachi etc you have more chance of the flight operating.

I'm on CX703 HKG-BKK (that continues to KHI) tomorrow evening. Interesting to see the load, even with the tag to Karachi

Ahh I hope things settle down by 20 June. Not only are cancellations annoying for getting to and from Hua Hin (especially when returning) but I am also booking in PE, which not all services between HKG and BKK have. To be given a downgrade after a rushed return from Hua Hin would be a slap in the face!

Does the last CX flight of the night HKG-BKK continue on to somewhere that night?

CX709 goes on to Mumbai I believe.
I arrived this morning and I've never seen the airport so quiet.
My original BKK-HKG on CX next weekend was cancelled a few months ago.

All foreigners are Farangs except Asians. :)

Just depends on which bar you drink at!!!!!

Yes, shut my office down at Chidlom and sent the staff home. Unfortunately they have not got much TV to watch, cable TV is off!!!

Is that some sort of twitter feed?

Extremely confusing. What happened to articles written by journalists?

Yes that's straight from twitter, articles are things you normally get hours after the event, assuming the author is free.

The Police Chief was arrested by the Army. Some have thought he was more sympathetic to the red shirts so maybe police just trying to stir things.
Also the trials of the yellow shirt leaders who closed the airport in 2008 has been put off until the end of the year.
Looks like the anti-government demonstrators will be the winners.Of course this does not bode well for the future as I doubt the red shirts would not object if their side is excluded from power.

Well twitter is almost essential for being in Bangkok now, keeping up to date with closures of BTS stations etc.

Having said that I am here now and all is well, it's curfew and I'm tucked up in my hotel in Siam. I arrived at 1900 and took the airport link train to Phaya Thai and connected by BTS to Siam area, all smooth sailing. I'll be taking the same route back to the airport in the morning to continue my journey to Istanbul

It is a matter of horses for courses. BBC and ABC and Age have in depth articles but if I want to find out exact demo hot spots to avoid or which sky train stations are being by passed and then available Barrows tweets are invaluable.

Absolutely, you should not be without twitter and in particular following Barrow whilst in Thailand at the moment, especially Bangkok

Absolutely agree even if only to avoid exorbitant taxi fees "because the mob is in the way".
I think new techie stuff is great and twitter an imperative. Barrow does fantastic job and provides reliable , real time advice. JoyV

Not grumpy, just don't have a use for it personally. I get that many enjoy using Twitter and that it has it's uses, it's just not a form of social media that I use. :)

i tend to agree its quite clunky for social purposes but in terms of getting live updates from an unfolding situation its a tool no traveller should be without -

the trick is to use it one-way only to search for peoples updates on the situation rather than sending your own (although it doesn't hurt to put your own 'broadcasts' out also using the same # tags).

I draw the line at day to day minutia such as what one has had for breakfast...

I am not connected for the majority of the time I am away from home. Nor do I have any motivation or desire to try and be connected when I am away.

Now on the few times free wi-fi is available and not slow, Twitter would be one of the last things I need.

The simple fact is I do not know how to use Twitter nor do I have the motivation or desire to learn to use it. Just because some people think Twitter is cool doesn't mean it is for everyone.

Also not grumpy, but just from the old school of being aware and using commonsense. I find things like twitter "schoolground gossip on steroi_s" and whilst i can understand it can be used in tight situations like BKK now, commonsense also prevails. Also dont use Facebook, app, tell time via a pocket watch, etc, so a luddite in a way but in 30 odd years travel, survived 6 coups, (3 in BKK), two bomb blasts, 3 earthquakes, 6+ typhoons, etc, etc,

You got all that information from Twitter?

Does it matter that I did my own research via other means?
