Bangkok shutdown

TID have published an insurance update- policies issued prior to- with travel booked prior to- the 13th Jan will be covered for changes/cancellation/possibly more.

Travel booked or policies issued after that date are not as the issues were no longer "unforeseen". Pretty fair I reckon, blind Freddy could see something coming to a head. This is possibly the most bloodless way, hopefully.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. If blind freddy could have seen it coming then one would imagine TID could and should have issued a statement in January, I think to exclude policies four months later is rough.

i think that must be itineraries currently ticketed, and policies currently underway, for travel to jan 2015.

any policy issued in the last day or so will not cover certain things for Thailand.

No, its for Jan 2014 on wards policies, hence my post

apologies then. I guess that must have been the start of the protests?

the martial law aspect can't be covered by the exclusion, although with the curfew only extending from 10pm-5am there shouldn't be any excuse for people missing flights. they can arrive at the airport early (even if there is an exclusion for people travelling to the arioort, it is still prudent to allow extra time). I can't see any other implications of the martial law in terms of what people might want to claim for.

the policy must cover all other aspects, or else TID wouldn't be able to keep selling policies to Thailand.

I am not sure I see it that way. I am supposed to be getting engaged. I paid for engagement rings and hoping to claim back the GST which is only valid for 2 months. If I don't go this trip the next one is September. I cant go any other time.

And TID has come out and made a statement about pre 13 January 2014. I am with QBE. Most of my bookings have been made since February 2014.

This makes no sense to me. Thailand is struggling to recover from last lockdown. The tourist industry does not need this right now.

When did you take out your policy JohnK :

For policies issued after midnight 12 January 2014 (AEST).
Cover is provisional upon a defined event occurring and these defined events are outlined in the combined Product
Disclosure Statement (PDS) and policy wording. In this case, if your policy was issued after midnight on 12 January 2014,
there is no provision to claim for amendment / cancellation fees due to hostilities, civil insurrection, military power or civil
war. Therefore if your pre-paid scheduled public transport services or pre-paid tour have been cancelled or restricted due
to the civil insurrection in Bangkok, cover will not be provided.

while I would check with your insurance company, what specific cover do you need? accident, theft, baggage should all continue to be covered. they are not related to the political situation.

delays, hotel closures, cancellations might be related. but those can be worked around. if your central bangkok hotel is closed, you'll get a refund and be able to book elsewhere for example.

I can't see how an insurance company could deny medical if it was the result of an accident completely unrelated to the protests/coup.

(edited to add I just read markis10s post immediately above and my thoughts seem correct... only specific events have been excluded)

Bangkok Shutdown was held on the 13th Jan - must be the trigger for insurance. State of Emergency (60 days) was declared on the 22nd Jan.

TID website flagged a warning in Jan about unforeseen event - last updated on the 30 Jan

The statement below outlines where your insurance starts/ends.

TID Travel Insurance
For example, if you are unable to reach your hotel due to a road being blocked by the military, you would not be covered for the cost of alternative accommodation – we recommend speaking with your travel agent or service provider to see what arrangements can be made.

If you fall ill from food poisoning or if you trip on the footpath while sightseeing or shopping, then you would be covered for medical expenses as these events are not related to the military action.

ISPs are ordered to report to the military, looks like the net is about to be shutdown.

Agreed, in retrospect it was obvious not that much of an argument really, if it was so obvious why didnt they say something back then?

It would appear I purchased policy on 25/12/2013. I thought it was later.

I am not worried losing money on a hotel night here and there worth $50.

I am worried about airlines cancelling flights and being stuck with nowhere to go. I also wouldn't appreciate having to spend a whole night at the airport but that has already been clarified that one should be able to get to/from airport with valid itineray.

See how we go. 7 days to go.

My biggest concern for my 20/06-25/06 stay in Hua Hin is also flights being cancelled or the airport being shut down.

From all media reports it all seems quite civil at the moment.

Aussie_flyer.... Will you keep us informed please, [U.S.Award Flight]I will be coming in to Bangkok from Paris on the 25th July to go to Hua Hin for 10 nts,but have 2nts at Grand Hyatt Bangkok on arrival, wife is starting to worry!!!

Regards Gary.

I will.

Guys if anything this action by the military has INCREASED your chance of the airport remaining open. There will be sporadic cancellations by airlines that operate multiple flights a day to bangkok due to lower numbers. I imagine some flights will be consolidated by carriers like cx and sq... exactly what happened in may 2010 during the riots and military deployment in bangkok.

Why is that?

Protesters won't be closing it, and the military don't have a great reason to.

Since I went during the shut down Bangkok protests they've been teetering and I feel that it was obvious that something could have happened, be it red shirt riots, yellow shirts riots or a coup. Did everyone else expect peaceful (second) elections and an uneventful change of government or something?

Why is that?

The military has not closed the airport in the past. They have no reason to, as it only hurts the national economy. It's the yellow shirt protestors that closed the airport last time, by blockading it.

Apparently the military has set up checkpoints on the road to BKK airport, to make sure protestors can't get out there!
