Bali 'crackdown' on damaged passports

many years ago I got dragged into the rubber gloves room becuase my passport looked like it had been slept with for 10 years (i carried around in back pocket without a cover) but the supervisor was fine with it, Interesting issue that arisen now, but Indonesia has always been well known to be suspicious of anything that is not in pristine condition, and its not just passports and money.

IMO this is embedded deep into the culture and I am not sure why, but they do try to keep anything in an As New condition. Its amusing to see household appliances still covered in manufacturers stickers, that everyone else would rip off as soon as we open the box, or leather car seats still covered in plastic. In my house I have 10 yo dining chairs that stilll have the manufactuers plastic over the cushion

Yup, we often still have original stickers/plastic on items or we add our own plastic, ie dining table, chair arms ect. :p:D Its the migrant in us, I havent seen the top of my dining table for 20yrs because of its covering.

For passport, I once got hubbys passport wet between Syd-Brisbane for an international flight. Panic hand drying in the toilets on arrival and looked almost new again.

To keep replacement costs down?

So the question raised by Bali is how damaged can a passport be to be officially damaged?. Hence airlines are naturally going to cautious about who they allow to fly. I suspect the LCC ones will say any damage (even though the passport is still functional) means denial of boarding, and kerching into their coffers.

I would assume dog eared, worn corners would be enough to begin concern Indonesians, so anything worse than that, definitely.
Suggest you ring an australian Airline that flys to Bali and ask them as obviously they will have receved an alert about this.

if you ring Batik or Air Asian, you will likely get a very non committal answer from them over the phone.

They would faint if they saw my old UK passport. Coat of arms and lettering gold foil completely worn off (trace visible if held to the light at an angle), and teeth marks. I'll see if I can dig it up.
