I have a First class SYD-LAX Award flight next week, then at 15:50 LAX-PHX flight with AA (2 separate tixs). I was hoping that my baggage could easily be transfered then I could leave the airport for a few hours. Qantas and AA said no guarantee that they will transfer and I would probably have to wait for check in to open.
I wanted to organise a pick up from the airport to visit Santa Monica beach with the QF Limo but unsure now whether I can ? Any advise pls ?

Why no guarantee? QF to OW on separate tickets will be interlined as per QF policy.

If you do some digging on here you will find reference to the policy. Frustrating that you aren't getting the proper answer.

Exactly. Probably a case of speaking to someone at QF who just didn't understand the question.

When you get to the airport in SYD the F check in team will be only too happy to help you out I am sure.

Thanks. I have spoken with AA America, American Syd and QF ... they all say NO they will not check luggage through. That I check in Syd, receive 1 boarding pass, clear customs at Lax, wait 4 hrs prior to the next flight before I can check luggage in. Arrive at lax about 09:30 and leave at 15:50, was hoping to book QF Limo in the morning to Santa Monica for a visit but this doesn't look possible according to them. Doesn't make sense to me, I would've thought 2 AA ticketed flights baggage could be transferred.

In December I flew QF SYD to DFW connecting to an AA flight to RIC. The flights were on separate tickets. When I checked in in SYD I showed them my AA itinerary and they checked my bags through to RIC. I had to collect the bags in DFW and then simply put them on the conveyor belt at the AA transfer desk. I guess this is what the OP will have to do.

Thanks Welsh-Kiwi, that is what I was expecting would happen and they told me no. But I think I'm going to run with that scenario and book the limo anyways. cheers

Irrespective of anything else, you WILL still need to collect your bags at TBIT before heading up the ramp to 'connections'. Up there AA have checkin counters where you can either drop them off (checked in in Sydney) or recheck them (check in at LAX). Once done you walk around to T4.

For mine, t is certain that if you front up at First check-in at SYD armed with both QF and AA e-tickets your bags will be tagged through to PHX.

Keep your First BP for SYD-LAX - this should give you access to the T4 Flagship Lounge before your flight to PHX. You can freshen up with a shower (request on entry to the FL area) have some lunch etc. before your ongoing flight.

Head to T4 even if you are on a USair metal flight to PHX departing from T3 - AA operate an airside bus for T4/T3 connections.

The link works for me.

Here's the actual notice: Latest Qantas News
Latest Qantas News
Ready to Fly - Changes to Through Check Processes 19 October 2010
During the recent volcanic disruptions, Qantas identified opportunities to further improve and streamline the Qantas customer experience

One of these opportunities is for customers to have their travel documented in one reservation (PNRs) which allows for a more automated rebooking process in the event of a disruption and enables our airport staff to focus on delivering a high standard of customer service.

From Wednesday 3 November 2010 customers holding two separate reservations (PNRs) for their journey will no longer be provided with through check or baggage interline through to their final travel destination.

Qantas will however, continue to provide this facility for customers connecting with Qantas flights and oneworld carriers (please note: other exemptions apply).

For further information please see Frequently Asked Questions.

Thanks serfty for making that very clear, appreciate it:)

+1

I'd be very, very surprised if what the OP was told turns out to be correct.

My personal experience is similar to Welsh-Kiwi's.

See here for OneWorld reference to interline baggage transfer (http://www.oneworld.com/airports-destinations/baggage-information/baggage-queries-during-travel).

It appears the OP layover is less than the 12-hr limit mentioned in the OW policy, so there is no reason for a denial to check through to the final destination.

Is it possible the OP misheard the instruction to clear Customs / drop bag on AA/US conveyor belt as 're-check in' ?

Hi legroom, I didn't mishear I rang 4 times lol (QF, AA & AA Oz) and clearly repeated back what they told me "that i have to collect my bag to clear customs (I understand that) then i would have to wait for check in to open to check my baggage because they could not do it from Syd"... I'm not going to worry about it, I think everything will be ok after hearing what others have said.

Not in my experience, they will deny you access to the terminal at security unless you are departing from T4 no matter whether there is a bus connection air side to T3 makes no difference.

I'm not sure you will have an issue, once you get your baggage and clear customs you should head through the connections pathway , in my experience they will look at your ticket and send your bags off and your free, in the off chance they have an issue " have a dykwia moment" I have found this works , in the very remote chance this does not work then put your bags in the limo.

How recently was that?

A bit silly if that's the case (specifically T4/T3 since March).

I know about the terminal = flight depart entry rules, but earlier this year, USair moved from T1 to T3 and AA set up a connection bus.

If I was denied entry to T4, then I'd go in through T3 & just take the Airside bus back to T4.

  • Los Angeles, CA (LAX) - You can now travel between the American Airlines and US Airways terminals without leaving security via a new shuttle service. The shuttle runs every 20 minutes between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m., with stops at Terminal 3, gate 39 and Terminal 4, gate 44.

Earlier this year, I had a boarding pass with AA flight number for QF12, no way could I get through T4 security (I wanted to use T4 FL lounge not TBIT F Lounge and then bus transfer to TBIT) Agree, there is a T3/T4 transfer bus, not saying it is not possible to have a US boarding pass and bus airside T3/T4 but personally would be surprised if they let people with a US Airways flight simply take the bus to T4 after they view your boarding pass, but stand to be corrected if anyone has personal experience with this issue.

Agreed with that, but things are changing. These days T5/6/7 are connected airside and a connector between T4 and TBIT is being built.

FWIW, several times over the last few year's I have found myself landside before a QF flight departing TBIT.

I have obtained my BP at TBIT, rocked over to T4 and proceeded through security - never an issue.

I have done this as the T4 F/L is IMHO a nicer place to be than the lounges at TBIT.

My plan has always been to be the inexperienced traveler if pulled up - that card has not been required so far. ;)

Serfty,

What do you think are the notable differences between T4 Flagship and TBIT F/L.

Also do you know if a QF F pax can invite a nonstatus and nonpremium pax flying same flight into T4 Flagship?
