Baggage Allowance on Qantas when Checking in with non-Oneworld carrier

I am flying Shanghai to Sydney via HK (Shanghai to HK on Hong Kong Airlines and HK to Sydney on Qantas). It is all booked on a single ticket. My ticket says 30kg baggage allowance for each leg. I am a Platinum FF member. Does this mean that I will receive 50kg baggage allowance for the entire journey (30kg on ticket + 20kg as Platinum FF)? Or does the 50kg only apply to the Qantas leg? Hong Kong Airlines are not part of Oneworld.

Also, would I need to pick up my luggage in HK given Hong Kong Airlines is not Oneworld?

Have contacted both Qantas and Hong Kong Airlines, and neither seem to know the answer…

Thanks in advance!

While I can’t answer the question, one clarification that might be useful to those who can … when you say “single ticket” does that mean the HK Airlines leg has a QF flight-number on the ticket you have?

I kinda suspect that if neither HK Airlines nor Qantas have been able to answer the question over the ‘phone, then it might cause you a lot of hassle at baggage check-in regardless of what the answer is. ‘Cos the check-in people aren’t likely to know a lot more than Customer Service, and you might be up for an annoying argument which you mightn’t need to pay for in the end but which is pretty stressful at the time.
Not to mention the fact that lugging over 30kg of luggage around per-person is a royal pain in the posterior ... :)

Both legs were booked in a single booking. HK Airlines leg does not have a QF flight number.

I would imagine the baggage rules are governed by the Most Significant Carrier rule applies here, meaning that your baggage allowance should be based on your Qantas allowance. Checking the HK Airlines site, it would seem that they only offer 23kg checked luggage, so if your ticket states 30kg, then that would be your standard Qantas allowance and this should be applying to the whole journey. I would therefore expect any OW Status to further add to your allowance.

But HK Airpines isnt part of Oneworld, and doesn’t have any affiliation with Qantas. I’d be pleasantly surprised if they honoured the extra allowance based on qantas status (unless that’s already reflected on the ticket).

It might take a day or two for it to update on the ticket (like jetstar?)

I would expect QF or OW status [extra] benefits to only apply to the QF flight (or a oneworld flight). Not on out of allaince partners unless expressly stated.
On the day of the flight the passenger status may be higher, the same or lower than the status at time of booking.
In this case QF seems to be just a travel agent selling HK Airlines tag on flights.

But assuming an interline agreement is in place, wouldn't that mean that the MSC rule applies?

I know that if Qantas is the marketing carrier on a flight operated by another airline, then the Qantas allowance would normally apply, whilst for interline, the MSC rule applies. But in this case, the MSC would be Qantas.

Not an expert on the matter - that's just my read on it. Would happily be corrected by someone with more accurate knowledge on the matter.

To go further, as HK Airlines is flying within the same IATA sub-area, but Qantas is the first carrier crossing it, it would be Qantas' rules.

My guess is it will depend on whether I need to pick up my baggage in Hong Kong. Do folks know whether there is an interline agreement in place between HK Airlines and Qantas?
