I have a booking with Qantas from Sydney to Hanoi via Bangkok. Sydney to Bangkok is with QF and Bangkok to Hanoi is with Vietnam Airline (although the ticket is issued by QF, it is still a VN airline number rather than co-share). Question: when checking in from Sydney, will I get the 15 kg extra for SG QFF on top of the normal ticket allowance of 30 kg?
Thanks in advance.

If it's a QF ticket and on the same PNR you will, yes.

EDIT: If you're in Y the allowance is 46kg. See here Checked Baggage Allowance | Qantas

That is a very specific question - and has received a specific answer.

On the assumption that you are returning as well, don't expect the same to apply when you check in with VN for the return.

If you are planning to leave heavy and return light, you will be fine. If you are planning to return with the same luggage, you may have an issue (i.e. VN will honour the ticketed allowance, not any SG QFF allowance).

I called Qantas. They told me that I would have to pay for baggage excess beyond 30 kg from Bangkok to Hanoi. I would appreciate your comments on this.

Correct. The Gold luggage allowance only applies to Qantas flights. The extra allowances is a non-ticketed benefit (the allowance doesn't reflect on the ticket), therefore it doesn't apply or transfer over to other airlines.

As per the link above to Qantas baggage:

[h=3]Allowances for Qantas Frequent Flyers[/h]Some Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club members are entitled to an additional non ticketed checked baggage allowance. This allowance applies to travel on:

  • Qantas and QantasLink operated flights with a "QF" flight number (excluding services to and from Lord Howe Island and "QF" codeshare services); and
  • Emirates operated flights between and within Europe, The Middle East, North Africa, Asia, New Zealand and Australia when booked with either a "QF" or "EK" flight number on your ticket.

Are you stopping over in BKK? If not, and you are checking in the luggage in SYD for the whole journey to Hanoi, I can't see QF trying to charge you for the VN leg - and you'll never come into contact with VN staff until you board (by which time your luggage will be in the hold!).

I will not have a stop over in BBK. They confirm that my luggage is interlined all the way to Hanoi. I agree, I can't see how Vn airline will be able to collect my luggage excess fee.

QF can refuse to check in your bags in Australia unless you pay the VN excess baggage charge. I had something similar (different airline) - apparently the system wouldn't even issue the bag tag unless the extra $ had been receipted.

Here is the outcome: I turned up with a bit more than 30 Kg. "It comes up with excess" said the check-in lady. "Can you waive the excess for me", I asked. She said "I can't. It is VN airline. You are fine with QF". I was given 2 options: having my luggage checked until BBK then recheck and pay for excess there OR remove some items to bring it to 30 Kg. It was in my plan and I transferred the excess to my cabin luggage. No prob after all. Note that I had to get my boarding pass for the 2nd leg BBK to Hanoi in BKK. I shall add that the check in lady was quite nice. She explained that she would help if it was only with QF.

I still think that's terrible though, not her service mind, but simply that they couldn't even take payment there and then so your bag would check right through. After all, you have an allowance for one leg, the longer leg, and while you may not have booked this itinerary through Qantas (though in this case you did I believe?) if they are offering these connections they should make sure they are a bit more seamless, especially when it comes to status benefits.

Thanks for following up though.

Note that different baggage allowances may apply each time you check in your baggage.

If you check in your baggage for a multiple sector journey, usually the baggage allowance of the most significant carrier in your itinerary will apply.

However, different rules may apply to tickets to and from the USA or Canada, as described below.

I would think that it's a case of the most significant carrier (MSC) rule applying ie despite the fact that VN would charge after 30kg, the fact that you get 46kg on QF should override that.

If the CSA overrides that excess I don't know if VN send a bill to QF for that amount.

If airlines do collect excess baggage fees it is for the entire journey that is reflected on the bag tag ie SYD/BKK/HAN at the applicable interline excess baggage rate which is always more expensive eg SYD QF BKK VN HAN which could be AUD30.00 to AUD40.00 per kg vs what VN would charge for their online (100% VN carriage) rate which could be USD10.00 per kg (wild guess).

The accepting airline cannot collect a partial excess baggage fee applicable from an downline port mid-journey ie QF can't take an excess baggage payment in SYD for excess that's only applicable BKK/HAN.

I don't know if Altea can be programmed to not charge excess baggage where the MSC scenario applies as above or whether such scenarios require a CSA to 'waive' the 'excess' which would be appear on excess baggage waiver reports should the airline look at such stats.

I would normally agree in principle with you on the MSC, except that qantas elite baggage is an unticketed benefit, therefore difficult to apply. if you were to look in reverse at the MSC, VN would have no way of knowing about it because it's not on the ticket.

Hi Longtoo,

Your non-ticketed allowance as a Gold Frequent Flyer will not apply on the booking as Vietnam Airlines does not recognise that benefit. You will be charged excess at Sydney Airport if over your ticketed amount.

Hope this clears it up.

Hi Red Roo, it is already over. I will travel light as i normally do on the way back.
Your check-in agent made it clear to me that if I insisted on my entitlement for 46 Kg from Sydney to BKK, I would have to recheck and pay for excess luggage at Bangkok. There was no capacity at SYD to charge me the excess fee.
if you care about your customer service, I suggest that you look it to this issue to make the travel of your customers as seamless as possible. I could have used CX or MH to Hanoi without this trouble.

Fair question. I thought I would be given my SC luggage allowance. I don't usually weigh up all options. I would go directly to Qantas website if price and traveling time are not so different compared to other alternatives. If this scenario pops up again in the future, I would opt for CX or MH.
