This weekend I have flown on a number of sectors on BA, both domestic and European.

On each occasion, "small" electronic devices such as tablets, e-readers, and smartphones, were allowed for use on takeoff and landing, provided that they were in flight mode. However, "large" electronic devices, such as laptops, still had to be off. They also specifically mentioned that the pre-flight safety video had not been altered to reflect these changes.

Can't wait for CASA / airlines to allow the same for Australian flights ...

I saw this a month ago in BA going HKG to LHR.. Except it said they had to be turned off for the inflight safety video, then could be turned on again.. Go figure...

In operation BA 56 JNB-LHR and BA 578 LHR-VCE on Friday....very pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the extra time !!!:)

This was the case for me on BA983 TXL-LHR and BA287 LHR-SFO back in April.
It was also the case on my AA flight from SFO to LAX but I can't remember if that was new or not.

Yes, now allowed. However, not all staff are familiar with the actual rules, nor is the safety video updated...

that makes sense to switch off during the safety demo? I just hope they continue to enforce that.

This was in effect when I travelled through the US in May/June. Seems to make sense from a mucking about point of view.

This is the same practice in the US with AA and US. Flight mode must be on for small devices, laptops must be stowed away

It does seem silly to get off a BA A320 where BA says it is safe to use then onto a Qantas A380 and they say it's dangerous

LH also offered the same on 50% of the flights I was on with them in Europe last month... those 50% being Airbus flights. They also allow use on the 747-8, but not on their other equipment, at this stage. It was noted in the in-flight magazine that approval was being sought for all aircraft types, as soon as possible.

Cheers.

Am I right that the local Aviation Authority has to approve the gate to gate use first?

AY allow this too.
Soon it will just be Qantas that doesn't.

It's got nothing to do with Qantas not doing it, it's to do with CASA not having any framework or regs TO allow it. Note Virgin doesn't offer it either..

The FAA approved it for US based airlines at the end of last October. It took a few days for all airlines to submit their paperwork to the FAA to allow for the new FAA rules. (AA started using the new rules on Nov 4.)
Europe and Canada approved it a month or so later after watching what happened in the US.

From what CASA said, it would be up to the airlines, though they would have to prove to CASA that "safety is maintained at all times".

AA had this the last time I was in the US. Although the small devices are now allowed to stay on, they need to be in flight mode. However, every person I could see around me was either texting or on Facebook etc. On one flight, a passenger adjacent took a phone call as we were taxing onto the take off runway. The FA's could not care less (and I was travelling in F so the offender was not too far away).

Give an inch and they take a mile.....
