BA 777 on fire at LAS

Bunch of interesting things in that story, JT.

First image shows fire in vicinity of engines, yet image 2 shows forward slides deployed. That surprises me a bit. Edit: serfty's video seems to show that pax didn't use the slide on the side where the fire was.

Pic 2 shows pax with both his carry-ons. That annoys me quite a lot.

Reported that plane was 'about to depart' - but obviously away from air bridge - fire on taxi or take-off roll.

Landing gear fire it looks like to me. Too dark of smoke and I can see the left turbine pretty clearly in the linked picture.

Looks like a rejected take-off for unknown reason. It could be because of an engine failure.

Well done to the crew member who DID NOT open left 2.

And food for thought for those who never listen to the safety brief.

Have you ever seen an aircraft fire? You can't read anything into the colour of the smoke. The fact that you can see the turbine also means nothing. There are lots of things on, and around, an engine that can burn when given a chance.

Well CNN are claiming it was a rejected take off, and whilst they aren't a particularly reliable source, that would seem likely. It could be for a lot of reasons...but engines that fail don't generally catch fire as nicely as this one seems to have done. It will be very interesting to see images of the cowling and underside of the wing when the become available.

Sky just had some aerial video footage and it appears the emergency exit just behind the right wing (right 3???) had been opened but the chute did not properly deploy, or am I mistaken?

This is an interesting video.

Mug punter's observations:

* First appliance focusses low - seems to be undercarriage; then moves up wards over engine/wing (fuel precaution?)

* Is that the coughpit crew emerging at about 2:20?

* Fire appliances don't want to leave a drop in the tanks (no point, is there?).

It looks like the first set of trucks are using water, and the later one(s) foam? Perhaps they are mindful of the issues they had with foam after the OZ crash at SFO.

Interesting to see the time line... CNN had someone phone in to say it took 5-10 minutes to put out the flames. From the video it appears much quicker - just a couple minutes. Although I'm not sure how long the fire was going before everyone started taking pictures.

Is this clip 1 radio channel or a combination of a few? To the untrained listener it sounds like there is a lot of talking on top of each other or is this normal?

I think it's just the one channel....and yes, there's often people talking over one another. The abort happens, and BA say a few things (firstly telling ATC that they are stopping), but ATC then need to get the other aircraft that are approaching the runway out of the way, so you hear go around instructions.
