AVV to get a monorail

Unfortunately now, even if they were to get a train line it would be slower than the skybus...

Unless you wait in line at MEL for 45 minutes prior to getting on the skybus. Im my few trips I have taken (all MEL to City), the bus has been typically held up with traffic. Added to that the fact an accident on the freeway will create chaos, I can see the train being sometimes quicker, and a lot more comfortable, and of course, cheaper! (zone II ticket)

If this goes ahead, I can see hotels and decent services cropping up out there, and more regular flights - who knows, maybe QF or VA would consider it a viable opportunity as well for regional flights.. who knows..

They would do like Sydney and make it a "Private Station" and charge you $20 for the privilege of using it. Don't forget an issue on the train line will do worse! That happens quite a bit too. That side of town already bad for congestion.. But I do get your point about skybus delays too

Would be good to potentially shift all LCC operations to AVV for Jetstar, like it once was, and other airlines, leaving MEL the premium hub. Though still poses an issue getting between the two.

Nah, QF would loose out too much by being unable to fool the un-educated who think they're flying Qantas when they're actually flying Jetstar.

I could see AVV working as a pure low cost airport if they convinced JQ, TT, Scoot, Air Asia, and maybe Royal Brunei and China Southern/Eastern to move ALL their flights there (domestic and international). For those people doing a domestic JQ onto an international JQ in Melbourne I imagine it would be a much easier process (i.e. HBT to BKK).

However, Melbournians hate AVV and that is why it only has 4/5 flights per day. I have never flown in or out of there on principle. The ridiculous Sun Bus leaves the city something like 2.5 hours before each flight meaning you spend AGES at a coughpy LCC airport 'just in case there is traffic'. AVV has only survived because Geelong loves it and that is enough to maintain a few piddly flights a day. Fox has grand plans for his little baby but simply cant get the airlines to commit. The article says AVV expects to grow 5 fold to 5 million passengers a year within 5 years. Please! Without multiple daily international flights this will never happen. VA will never move there and neither will QF. If my VA Tulla flight was cancelled and I was moved onto a VA AVV flight I would be FURIOUS. They could target Rex and QF Link with very low fees but I doubt they would move. Very cheap parking might compensate people for the very long drive out there but they would have to have a very good on-time performance for people to trust this.

They could transport people from the train station by rollercoaster and I still wouldnt use AVV.

Oh here we go. Ho hum I knew this would happen another thread for those who don't like AVV to vent. Who cares? If it works it works, if it doesn't tough luck for Lindsay Fox. Should all be thankful that AVV is there to keep a check on operators of Tullamarine airport. If there are infrastructure improvements to make it more viable, that has to be a good thing for choice, competition and for travellers in general - whether they use it or not, there will be benefits for those travelling exclusively out of MEL as well.

Of course it has a natural catchment for Geelong and the expanding (south) western part of Melbourne. And seriously no-one is advocating it as a substitute for Tullamarine for regular domestic flights - more as a supplement. It may have a place for LCC international operations (Scoot perhaps?) where people are less time sensitive than domestic, so the extra 20-50 mins travel time to get there is less of a factor.

Or a train that can go at 400Kilometers per hour,yes thats right 400KPH. They have one in Shanghai, and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life, better than the Shinkansen Tokyo to Osaka. It was rejected out of hand by the state government, probably because tourist don't vote??

But what is the point of 400kph train over such a short distance? That's a 5 minute trip allowing time for acceleration/deceleration. A train travelling at a modest 125kph could reach MEL from the CBD in 12 mins. The 7 min saving is immaterial for most pax in the context of air travel.

Well is it a monorail I suppose… but I don’t see them building one of these for $200 million without the same shortcuts as in The Simpsons

It seems all cities with monorails don't want them (I personally don't mind it).
It could be they are going to combine the two in Melbourne
