Australian state border restrictions

I despair at the way the states react to a few community cases in another state...I said in the other post re international borders opening that it could be 5 years before the international borders open!

I have my doubts that our present government would act that fast.

So people's predictions for QLD not making Greater Melbourne a hotspot next Friday 1am 25th June? Should I consider cancelling my trip now or wait until Anna's announcement on Wednesday or Thursday? 🤔

Id wait. We desperately need VIC’s tourism dollars :)

"Brett Sutton flew to Canberra on Wednesday for an awards ceremony held by the National Health and Medical Research Council when Melbourne was still subject to a 25-kilometre travel restriction."

Must be nice to be able to approve your own travel exemption, not exactly leading by example.

1000’s of people are given exemptions daily. I don’t have a problem with him attending a function

Just got the text from SA Health reminding me I recently returned from NSW and asking if I had visited a long list of exposure sites. Thankfully no

I am dreading partner's late return from Sydney tonight.....only there for a night and on work in the CBD but we all know SA's trigger finger.

Here’s the part of the ABC story you omitted, presumably because it didn’t fit your agenda:

Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt has dismissed criticism of Victoria's Chief Health Officer over an interstate trip during Melbourne's lockdown.
Mr Hunt said Professor Sutton was entitled to travel for the event.

"I think that story was deeply unfair, this was a meeting of the National Health and Medical Research Council, he plays an important role," he told ABC Radio Melbourne.
"My understanding is he followed all permitting, all appropriate restrictions and so I think it was completely appropriate and professionally reasonable."

But he’s Victorian and it’s the member with an axe to grind about everything Victoria = evil, demonic people, just ignore ;)

I know what you mean about travel exemptions I think I mentioned I just transited through MEL and there were so many people and flights going, nothing like the last lockdown.

Our company has on average 1400 staff per day coming and going from Melbourne no dramas.

Apparently exposure sites in Blue Mountains now which is where we were 🤞

I don't have much of a problem with Prof Sutton going to Canberra. But think not whether or not he was entitled to; its whether he was prepared to make a sacrifice, a very small sacrifice (not going) when compared to the sacrifices he has required Victorians to make for months and months and months..

No ... no sacrifice for him. He took his entitlement. And I'm not aware that the meeting of the National Health and Medical Research Council could not have been attended via video link.

Simple fact : one of the reasons to go beyond the 25km rule is for essential work. I have no doubt Brett Sutton broke the 5km rule when it was in place and probably the 25km rule to do his job. Now one can debate whether attending a NHMRC in person is essential or not - but if you’re the only one calling in it is very different to having everyone on a video call. F2F is more effective generally as well - now is his work essential? CHO in the middle of a pandemic?

story you omitted

Nope I didn't omit anything, what I posted was all that was posted at the time I read it.

I have no problem with essential work travel that can legitimately not be done remotely, but due to Sutton's recommendation to restrict travel many people had to cancel important events like weddings, attend remote video streamed funerals etc and lots of awards have been accepted remotely over the past year.

@RooFlyer made the point more eloquently, he could have chosen to set a better example, they all ought have worked out how to have vc meeting by now. Sure its no fun to be the only remote caller but sometimes you take one for the team.

axe to grind about everything Victoria = evil, demonic people

Nope I call things as I see them no matter where they occur. I have also never used the kind of hyperbole you just demonstrated above. Sad that you feel the need to name call.

This sort of flaming is no better than what you are complaining about.

There is no doubt that opinions of what is essential travel vary from reader to reader. I was happy enough that Brett went to Canberra just as I was that Scott went to UK. Not every one would agree with me, and I am happy for them to voice a contrary view - but they should be able to do it in a civil manner.

I am glad that our week in Tassie was successfully negotiated a couple of weeks ago, as if it was next week I would be worried that the Bondi case might put a spanner in the works.

I think the issue with Scott, wasn't that he went to the G7 , I think no one argue that high level Government talks wouldn't be classed as important essential travel

But being photographed having a wonderful time in a UK pub for lunch when 25 million of us are not allowed to travel there due to the... well "supposed danger" of being in a UK pub is not setting the best example

He should have flown to the UK had it essential meetings and talks and remained in a bubble with his staff when not working

If he has magical powers to not catch COVID from random pub staff and patrons then surely we all have them and should be allowed to travel internationally no?
