Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Only during times of threatened health risks. We are past that now as states manage outbreaks and not panic.
No, borders shut thick and fast by some states if 1 COVID case outside of incoming International Traveller. Even is vaccination program going well, say 50% of population vaccinated, if 1 COVID mystery case in say SA or NT, McGowan would still shut his border.

It’s actually the states who have legal authority on such matters, not the federal Government. Plus such penalties would have to be passed by the parliament, not just a unilateral decision by the executive government. Doubt it would pass.
For what it's worth, the unilateral decisions by governments in almost every state have been made in 2020 that should make anyone with a shred of belief in individual liberties shudder.

I hope in the fullness of time we will reflect on the dystopian and disgusting behaviour of certain states in particular. And the failings of others.

Oh I agree. The guiding principle should be the management of any outbreak and ability to trace back. If borders are shut just because and on a whim, then from now on it is against the Constitution.

What is needed is national, interconnected contact tracing regime, with coordinated QR tracking and state health departments working together cooperatively. 😂 🤣

How can something have been compliant with the constitution up until now, but in the future it is not (or vice versa)? Unless the high court intervenes to adjudicate a particular matter of course.

Because there is provision in the Constituion for States to take barrier action if there is a significant disease threat to their state (presumably that can be introduced there if the borders are open). There is no longer any threat and god willing, it stays that way.

Clearly not addressing Qld, where a very strong majority supported and continued to support border closure……

I wonder how many would support it if the borderline propaganda from the government and even some health officials was toned down to reflect reality...?

Speaking of the Western Australian Premier... WA haven’t announced when they are lifting their borders to NSW and VIC? Did I miss any announcement?

No you haven't missed anything. I check various news sites multiple times every hour hoping to see something positive from the dear leader of WA. Not a peep which is making me anxious as we look toward the 28th day here in Victoria.

Support is irrelevant. Our democracy is not about doing what’s popular, it’s about doing what’s right.

Run a popular poll in Queensland on bringing back the death penalty, deporting all Muslims and cutting off the genitals of accused sex offenders and how do you think they’ll go? Doesn’t mean we should do it.

NSW mystery case watch

Even though the mystery case has been reportedly resolved, it’s still showing up on the daily PDF report - still 433 mystery case total (so we might need to wait another day for the statistics to be updated). The mystery case has disappeared off the ‘live’ 4 week report.
Nsw mystery case watch

Today’s reports indicate:
- 0 in the past 7 days
- 0 in the period 8-14 days
- 0 in the period 15-28 days
- at least 34 cases older than 28 days but since before Crossroads emerged.

Strangely still no change in total mystery cases - 433 mystery cases total.

Then the Prim Minister has to grow a pair and once we have a suitable percentage vaccinated (I don't know, 60% maybe) declare nationally COVID is no longer a significant disease threat and remove/punish state's ability to close borders.

Australia’s active local cases

12 in NSW
29 in SA (all in quarantine/hospital)
And proof enough for McGowan to block SA and NSW until 2021.

I arrived back into Launceston this afternoon. I came direct from Sydney having cancelled the SA component of the trip. They've set up an entirely new structure to greet arrivals, apparently in the last week or so. Seems like they're settling in for the long haul!
I was asked if I had been in SA or Victoria and when I replied in the negative was waved through. I'm not sure where they are going with it, now the Vic/NSW border is open. Sydney airport was the busiest I've seen it in a long while.

But as of Friday, Tas will only be shut to SA... seems weird....

Now NSW and VIC are open to QLD FINALLY - I’ve booked 4 trips already pre Xmas and one includes Tassie... will see this new arrivals process myself!

Is it bad to wish that WA get a case so he's not so smug?

While not wishing a case on anyone, WA really doesn’t inspire confidence that when a case happens they are prepared to act. Instead everything has been put into hard borders, there’s no defence in depth or testing of procedures.

Other states have had to be more active in testing their procedures and you saw how quickly SA was overwhelmed, from a procedure point of view, with queues for testing and having to turn people away as an example.

The community is not prepared either, SA showing panic buying is still a thing in November 2020. The lack of social distancing creates a tinderbox if there is a hotel breach.

I note WA is very reluctant to increase hotel quarantine numbers either.

Thanks.... well there will be white hot scrutiny on WA now if VIC keeps tracking along they will be allowed in from Saturday (because unlike QLD, WA can meet more than monthly!) and NSW I think roughly 1.5 weeks later.

So WA should be giving an announcement shortly to that effect... they need to give people some time to plan....

Will be interesting to also hear from:

WA on SA
Tas on SA
QLD on SA (update promised no later than Friday)
