Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

In the early 90's it wasn't uncommon for me to hop around a few bars/pubs with some friends on a Friday or Saturday night., in Oxford St in Sydney. Always busy and almost always standing. I wouldn't have necessarily described the crowd as bogan. ;)🤣
The bunch I used to drink with in the 70s were all software engineers - might have been bogan, but I don’t think so. It just seemed to be the thing - we didn’t stand at the bar but just in a group - hated it, but enjoyed the group.

I agree. And lets keep them out of QLD
I am not totally unsympathetic to your attitude as I am as much of a scaredy cat as you are when it comes to this virus. However if we are going to move forward as a country, both economically and emotionally, we have to open up the whole country so that all parts of it can start functioning again. Yes there will be the odd outbreak, but Qld, NSW, ACT and now Vic have shown they can leap on hotspots and beat them. It really is just what we need to do.

I am going to continue to be cautious given my age, but I still support opening up so that those currently unemployed can have a chance to find work and hospitality and tourism can survive.

Watching tonight's news - vision of the re-opening of pubs etc in Melbourne and people celebrating. The venues in the vision were pretty packed and not very many masks. People standing, drinking etc. Now, I don't have a problem with the latter, but was a bit surprised at the scenes. I wonder if there was some 'playing up for the camera'?

I know you can get rid of masks while eating and drinking, - does that mean you effectively 'check your mask at the door'?

That's certainly been my experience all over Europe. You know how well that turned out........ ;)

Went out tonight and had my first sit-down meal at a restaurant since June.

Boy it felt good.

Tried to be cautious (kept mask on until the food arrived, put it back on after last dish was done, hand sanitiser after walking out) but realising usefulness might be limited in such an environment if someone has it.

Indeed, but do remember that wearing a mask is largely about controlling the spread of any disease from yourself as opposed to avoid catching it.

on ABC news tonight there were 2 separate segments on QR check-in one about Vic (who plan to release something) and one on Tas where collecting details (manually or QR) is optional.

Was surprised that the Victorian Premier hadnt planned ahead for re-opening during the really long lock down and released an app like NSW and ACT have? And more surprised collecting details is optional at pubs and restaurants in Tas.

Irrespective of zero community spread, we should be physically distancing and checking in until such time as there is a widespread vaccine. Otherwise when there is a breach (and there will be again as NZ proves, as long as there are still international arrivals) it will spread faster and take longer to contract trace.

Saw the same and I was really surprised that NSW hasn’t made it mandatory to use! Lots of reports about businesses not using anything in Sydney. Gladys raised potentially making it mandatory.... why wouldn’t you? Seems sensible...

My cricket club had its first training session today with strict caps on numbers and time slots and even they had a QR code system for check-in and check-out. I'm unable to attend so far as they're outside my 25km bubble.

I think what I'm getting at is that while a universal QR system is ideal, business and organisations are getting along doing what they can.

Exactly, and the VIC rapid response team using the Killmore cafe's records to crush that outbreak was a great example. They had a manual system at their cafe, but it was still a system and they were able to use to to great effect.

Sure a centralised QR system would be more efficient I'm sure.

Dan was asked the question at a press conference a few days ago and the answer was pretty much there is only so much their IT can develop at one time. It will possibly come but not at the moment.

That's what we have in place in the UK, every time I go to hockey whether that be training or a game we scan a QR code and check-in. Most venues just use the NHS issued QR code so makes it easy as you scan using the app and in you go, whereas one venue we've played at had their own website so had to go and fill in all the information.

There was an update today, they have one being built as we speak, one that integrates directly with their contract tracing CRM platform.
The other states do not have that integration and hence why they decided not to use the other versions floating around Australia, they want it to be directly connected into their contract tracing system.

I think Queensland relaxed the standing at a bar drinking part, changed about 2 weeks ago.

I actually think sitting while having a drink is a good idea.
Not a beer person and certainly not a bar/pub person, isn't standing at the bar all the time very tiring and loud?

With one past case reclassified with 2 new cases today the coughulative cases has increased by one (not two).

Pleasing too is that despite the restrictions being announced on Monday that those who got tested yesterday went up to 24,673 which is the highest number since 4 Sept when 25,031 were announced.

I'm curious as to how there are so many tests done. Do so many people have minor symptoms that could be construed as possibly having covid?

Let's say if I got a dry throat in the morning, yet I had the heating on during sleep, I wouldn't even think of getting tested because I've been working from home and have minimal contact with others.

In my experience standing if often more a by product of there not being any seats/tables available (in pre-COVID times).

Well with all the kidlets back in daycare, yes.

More people in workplaces and more people moving around so more people picking up minor cold bugs.

But definitely the daycare thing

Because the advice is, no matter how mild the symptoms are, go and get tested. And it been hammered home.

VIC has had very strong testing rates, the message has been very strong and clear around this for a long time now.

Since this has all started, I’ve been waking with a headache most mornings but I’m fairly sure it’s not Covid related.

A few nurse friends who have been stood down from hospitals through the pandemic worked at some of the drive through clinics. Feedback was that many people coming through appeared to be “bored housewives/househusbands in X5s”. I guess it got the numbers up.

Yes, they all cracked it when they were told they now had to isolate until receiving results.
