Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

I wish the Vic Govt would actually report if those who died have other health problems. It's headline grabbing to say a 30yo young person died without more details.
They asked the question during the press conference, but Andrews said they had to respect the family’s wishes about what details could be released.

It’s not headline grabbing, it’s reporting the facts.
Young people without any health problems can end up seriously ill and die with COVID-19.

A young Emergency Medicine trainee doctor was in ICU this week after contracting it.
(Not related to this death report).

Not disputing that it doesn't affect young healthy people, but in this instance, was the 30yo without health problems though?

Doesn't have to come with a name right? Without context, it won't mean much.

If the only reason for releasing medical history is to give people reassurance that people under 50 who die from COVID had something wrong with them to begin with, then that to me is a pretty poor reason. I’m under 40 so personally the risk to me is lower, but there’s still a risk.

Not withstanding the fact it’s private information and without permission can’t be released.

Serious health problems in 30s are uncommon enough that it can be quite difficult to maintain confidentiality if any details are given (even without any journalistic digging that might follow from a case like this)

Bungle as tracing 'scaled back'
Victorian authorities reportedly scaled back contact tracing efforts as coronavirus spread into Melbourne communities.
Sources very close to the operation told Nine News that efforts were reduced in May and June as authorities believed they were close to eliminating the virus.
They said contact tracers were too reliant on businesses, like abattoirs, conducting their own contact tracing, saying the failings were "catastrophic" and "worse than the hotel quarantine program".
Premier Daniel Andrews denied scaling back resources over the time period, saying: "No, that team is a very big team, it's growing steadily as cases have grown.”
"We've always had people in reserve. If it has to grow further, it will."
According to Nine, the number of tracers rose from 57 in mid-June to 2000 by the end of July, with many call handlers brought in being Australian airline staff, and Telstra and Medibank workers.

Grim prediction for virus spike
Victoria’s coronavirus cases are projected to continue climbing throughout August, with the state government’s own estimates predicting average daily cases of 1100 at its peak.
The Victorian government’s estimates show cases staying above 1000 for eight days, and remaining above 300-a-day even with stage four restrictions scheduled to end in mid-September, The Australian reports.
Average daily new case numbers will not return to levels seen before the second outbreak until October, the estimates suggest.
Under the modelling, cases will rise to 900 by next Friday, and surpass 1000 cases for the first time on August 16.
Average daily new cases will then remain above 1000 for eight days, peaking at 1100 from August 17 to August 22, before dropping back under 800 towards the end of the month.
The state announced a new record high on Wednesday of 725 cases and 15 deaths.
There are now 7227 total active cases in Victoria, 1435 of those connected to aged care.
Total number of coughulative cases is now 13,035.

Not all bad , they are understanding it all a bit better, perhaps leading to better management.
Perhaps they should print up some projections to give to the naysayers, or upgrade the covid app to automatically provide infection a daily infection report.
I understand they should not create mass panic, but a bit more fear could tighten up some folks….

The world daily new cases 7 day moving average graph has rolled over for the first time ever and is heading down… why is moot….

I'm pretty sure that privacy doesn't survive death.

I.e. once you're dead all of your details are essentially public.

Definitely not my experience. Privacy rights seem to extend into death...

And yet he was very quick to confirm he wasn't a healthcare worker.

My suspicion is some additional issues, but it doesn't suit the narrative.

And anything to put the fright into some Victorians is a good thing.

Agree, good to put the fright into Sydney Siders too, particularly the Bondi crowd and in Brisbane the Southbank crowd too.

But suspect more than likely there will have been some contributing factors.

Another school closed in NSW as community transmission case detected

A high school in Newcastle, NSW, has closed today after a confirmed case of coronavirus in the community.

St Pius X High School at Adamstown will be shut for the rest of the week to allow for cleaning and urgent contact tracing to take place.

It is not known if the case is a student or another member of the community and no source has been identified.

Pure speculation would be the person who dined at 3 venues in the Hunter region......but if not then Unknown source/community transmission?!?!

Sounds like one of the infamous Victorian girls in QLD was a lady of the night and performed her “job” whilst infected. Contact tracers are having a difficult time in finding out information about her “clients”
Regardless of the inference of job or just partying - if they were infectious during the flight, then that would give airlines some comfort that their CovidSafe measures have some effectiveness. It could also be that’s the cause of infection, rather than they infected someone.

I believe that's why their photos and names were published so that their close contacts could identify them.
