Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

And even if we could and elimination was the goal, Australia would have to cut itself off from the rest of the world completely. No air crews, no people coming from overseas, no ships docking in the ports.

Perhaps elimination of community spread is the goal, as opposed to elimination of the virus.
Theres a difference between elimination and eradication:
Eradication refers to the reduction to zero (or a very low defined target rate) of new cases in a defined geographical area. Elimination refers to the complete and permanent worldwide reduction to zero new cases of the disease through deliberate efforts.

Again my point, no one knows what the target is.....

Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt says Australia will not outrightly pursue an elimination strategy, but will continue to strive towards zero COVID-19 cases

Perhaps calm down a little rather than reading so much into what is just a paraphrasing of one comment?

'Striving towards zero cases' is hardly incompatible with *any* strategy.

I couldn't seem to find an appropriate thread to post this in the Covid board so maybe worth starting one on Australian cases now it's here to stay. Mods feel free to combine with another appropriate thread.

Just now SA has another report - Conductor and violist Brett Dean, who was due to play at this year’s Adelaide Festival, has been diagnosed with coronavirus. He has just returned from Taiwan and has had a cough but had continued rehearsals with the Adelaide Festival Performers.
That brings SA to 8, three previously and all of whom are recovered (a couple from China and 1 from Princess Diamond) and just this week, two women one from Italy and one from Iran, a baby from Iran and now two men from Taiwan. Maybe Taiwan should have been included in the ban from China? I think my numbers are correct but Adelaidenow reports only 7.
The second wave has begun. We are all in this together. Keep safe. Do the right thing.

The second wave has begun.

Some debate whetehr this is really a second wave, or really the first wave of local transmissions. As March through mid June all cases could be attrinuted to international arrivals or close comntacts of those arrivals.

We are all in this together. Keep safe. Do the right thing.

If only all these idiots flouting restrictions would get onboard with this attitude. Its so much easier to remain positve when you feel everyone is acting for the greater good.

Media release
15 July 2020
Victoria has recorded 238 new cases of coronavirus since yesterday, with the total number of cases now at 4448.
The overall total has increased by 224, after 14 cases were reclassified – largely due to duplication.

Within Victoria, 29 of the new cases are linked to outbreaks and 209 are under investigation.
One new death has been reported since yesterday, a woman in her 90's who died in hospital. To date, 27 people have died from coronavirus in Victoria.
In Victoria at the current time:

  • 790 cases may indicate community transmission
  • 1931 cases are currently active in Victoria
  • 105 cases of coronavirus are in hospital, including 27 in intensive care
  • 2488 people have recovered from the virus
  • Of the total cases, 4017 cases are from metropolitan Melbourne, while 305 are from regional Victoria
  • Total cases include 2329 men and 2109 women
  • More than 1,197,300 tests have been processed
Cases currently linked to public housing in North Melbourne, Flemington and Carlton are as follows:
  • 247 cases are residents of various public housing towers in North Melbourne and Flemington. Investigations are continuing into how these cases are linked.
  • 36 cases are residents of various public housing towers in Carlton. Investigations are continuing into if and/or how these cases are linked.
Cases currently linked to key outbreaks are as follows:
  • 150 cases have been linked to Al-Taqwa College
  • 33 cases have been linked to Somerville Retail Services in Tottenham
  • 29 cases have been linked to Menarock Life Aged Care Facility in Essendon
  • 21 cases linked to JBS abattoir in Brooklyn
  • 12 cases have been linked to LaManna Supermarket Essendon
  • 9 cases linked to Embracia Moonee Valley aged care
  • 5 cases linked to Steel Mains in Somerton
  • 4 cases linked to Waste Equipment and Hiab Services, Ardeer
  • 4 cases linked to TD Cabinets in Dandenong South
  • 3 cases linked to Bell Collision Repair Centre in Preston
  • 2 cases linked to St Basil’s Homes for the Aged in Fawkner

Very few new cases today outside of the restricted LGAs. ie little spread is occurring. coughulatively this has been the case and so the containment seems to be working ok so far. Where there are cases they do not seem to be growing, except for Greater Geelong which now sits on 7 active cases.

Greater Geelong has a population of 250K and there is a lot of daily movement between it and the Melbourne GMMA.

I'm completely calm, thank you so much for the advice, amazing contribution to the discussion.

Its just clear we don't really have *any* clear strategy when no one can articulate it 😂

I suspect there are *multiple* strategies but no one is quite brave enough to come out and be clear, because they don't know. Its clearly a conversation our leaders need to have.

Because no government wants to put their backside on the line. It would be political suicide if a government came out and said its aiming for elimination and then couldn’t deliver on it.

I suspect (sadly) you may be correct!

Parents were meant to be leaving on a 6ish week trip to Europe tomorrow (clearly now not happening). This finally became a 10 day trip to NT next month. Uluru, Alice and Darwin.
Of course, no flights from CBR, so they've been booked to fly out of SYD. They were planning to drive up, spend the night in an SYD airport hotel, then fly out next morning.
Today, NT declared the entire Sydney Metro area to be a hot spot and if they spend the night in Sydney prior to flying out, they won't be allowed in to the territory.

And we were supposed to be in Athens right now but will undertake a week in Cairns next week but am worried the direct flight Adl - Cairns will be cancelled and if we get rerouted then we may run into issues especially on way back to Adelaide where they include a transit as an entry. Or that Qld will close up. Even to SA.

And very valid concerns too. Not beyond the bounds of possibility that QLD will close off all inter-state travel again so seems like the safe thing at the moment is to holiday in your own State.

Headline (tabloid) news tonight “Coronavirus out of control in Melbourne”. “Andrews government fails to deliver on promise to have 4000 ICU beds ready by July”. (Only 700 ready). Sheesh, I don’t know much about medical care but would have thought you wouldn’t bring ICU online unless you needed it.

Aaah tabloid news.

In addition to my other reply on ICU bed numbers in Vic I noted that today that Sutton made the comment that at the time he spoke today that there were 22 in Vic on ventilators, but that Victoria could go to 2000 or more on ventilators if required.

That is not the same as the number of ICU beds, but it does indicate the capacity to treat people with ventilators if required.

Yes I agree but we have pretty much covered SA because when we were younger we couldnt afford to travel even interstate. And while we get the odd nice day, SA in July and August is pretty rank. There isnt anywhere in SA I want to go right now.

I have a friend who is due to fly to Darwin in early August to visit daughter and grandchildren. Qantas has changed his flight about 3 times already, including having his flight from Canberra arrive after the new flight to Darwin left. I will mention this to him, although hopefully he already knows.

I have another friend who flew to Darwin via Brisbane and Cairns. Cairns to Darwin was with Airnorth. I know it would be a major upheaval, but maybe something like that might work?
