Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Northern Hospital had another 3 positive tests from staff for 5 in total now and the Hospital ED closed for 72hrs to clean

Daughter's hospital (not in hotspot, but one of Melbourne's largest) have today just tightened their rules on when, where and how long for masks should be worn.

ie Not surprisingly they believe the risk has increased.

Same hospital had a patient in recently for a bowel procedure. Post procedure the patient advised that they had tested positive for a test that they had done prior to admission, but which they deliberately did not reveal to staff. Presumably so they could still get their procedure done. Fortunately it looks like the strict PPE procedures at the hospital have prevented anyone becoming positive though two staff were isolated just in case.

I'm surprised a question about Covid contact wasn't asked on admission. Do they take Medicare number when testing? If so I'd expect that positive to be a reference attached to that number.

Why do you think it was not asked? The patient was asked. I said they deliberately did not reveal it to staff. They lied.

Also as I stated the positive result came back afterwards. They were in for a day procedure.

Unfortunately some people put their own needs above others like the the Brisbane man that got tested and then flew to New Zealand, with his positive test result coming through while he was in the air.

PS. The hospital has always been one that was tasked to accept Covid 19 positive patients and so they have have strict protocols. They have very strict planning and indeed due the current case surge they have already rejigging things with respect to ventilator rooms in case there is any surge generated for such needs from the hotspots and in particular the apartment towers as the profile there has a lot of at risk people.

You didn't state that they were asked. You said they didn't reveal. Different meaning to me. Reveal is more a voluntary disclosure. I'd have used Dishonest or even Lied. And there is no need to bold.

You also didn't state in the original post that the positive result became known to the patient after the procedure but my interpretation was that they only told the staff the test was positive after the procedure had been done.

I doubt there are any medical results attached to a Medicare number.

If they had been a known positive prior there would have been no need for me to have stated that they had a test prior as one cannot be a known positive without testing and a test result issued.

I would have just stated that a patient who had a positive test result went in for a procedure. So the only reason to mention that they were tested prior to the procedure was that the patient would have known that they may be positive.

Why would I just say they did not not reveal that they were tested, and not did not reveal the more serious matter that they were positive?

There are going to be some serious ethical questions to be dealt with in the lock down of buildings.

Darryl the addicted person urgently needs some heroi_ or he will start 'cold turkey' withdrawal. Do the police provide him with methadone under medical supervision?

Matt the meth addict urgently needs some 'ice'. He will behave very erratically and violently unless he gets some and soon. What do you do?

Angela the alcoholic has run out of alcohol and has no money to buy anymore. Withdrawal from alcohol without medical supervision for an addict will cause many adverse outcomes. Angela has no intention of going sober and is a long-term and very heavy drinker.

In all of these situations supply is illegal, yet it will ensure safety on the estate.

Dan just confirmed this morning that Drug and Alcohol support for those in the towers that require it is one of the needs that are being met and which has already been deployed overnight at the towers.

A range of other social and health needs were/are also being addressed.

You would have to opted in at MyGov as a minimum, and even then I doubt that Covid19 test results would be part of that. Let alone just getting a test done where there is yet no result.

People need to reveal things when asked. Some do not.

Now if you go to a drive through testing clinic, and not a walk in one or have people test you at home, the car rego will be recorded and Vic Police get access to this very quickly. As I reported a while back BIL's car was pulled up for checking due to number plate scanning as to why the driver was not self-isolating (He was, but he was not the driver).

At most, Medicare would know you had a test. They won't know the result.

My own personal recent experience is that detailed questionnaires are completed prior including on symptoms, international travel, Covid 19 etc prior to medical related procedures:

ie
  • When I donated blood recently
  • When my daughter recently went in for day surgery for 4 wisdom teeth to be removed.
  • Paramedics who attended and picked up father last Thursday (suspected DVT in calf post spinal surgery the week prior) asked questions even before entering the home.

Just on testing and case numbers:

In Victoria's, and indeed every state's, first case surge many infected people will not have shown up as a confirmed case. In part as:
  • Testing was very limited in availability
  • Tests were rationed and went to those quite ill, or with a range of symptoms and or/severe symptoms
  • If you had mild and or few symptoms you were just asked to self-isolate for 14 days and were not tested
So many infected people will never have appeared in the tests results, and so the true graphs of infected people are not actually known but will have been much higher that what the various graphs of Covid 19 cases now show.

Only a few locations such as aged care facilities or individual workplaces saw widespread or even complete testing. Though yest some widespread screening was later done of groups such as teachers or health care workers. And more recently f those in hotel quarantine.

Testing over time became more available everywhere.

With the apartment towers they are looking to try and achieve 100% testing of 3000 people. In the hotspot suburbs they are looking to achieve very high test levels including of people with no symptoms. Such high testing levels of cohorts within which Covid19 is prevalent of this scale has not been done before in Australia and not because health authorities did not want to, but simply as they did not have the resources to do so.

So while current positive case numbers per day are alarming, if we were were testing the same way as was being done in the first surge the positive case numbers per day would be a lot lower. How much lower is anyone's guess, but most of the asymptomatic cases and many with only mild symptoms would not have been tested.

So again I am not minimising the seriousness of this current outbreak, but it does give me hope that it can be controlled despite the minority of people who continue to do the wrong thing.

Not sure if noted up thread

Today’s Victorian number is 74
16 from controlled outbreak
1 from quarantine
4 from routine testing
53 under investigation

With the apartment towers they are looking to try and achieve 100% testing of 3000 people.

Presumably they will also get very accurate stats from the towers of numbers declining and their reasons for doing so?

I heard Dan mention that any resident of the towers refusing a test would stay in lockdown for a further period of time

Yes, without saying what that is. He also hinted that everyone may have to stay in quarantine for 14 days. It may well depend on how many refuseniks they encounter.

There really needs to be a consequence for refusing a test ( Protecting our own, and friends/family's, health is enough for most of us!) and having to be be quarantined for longer is probably a very good one.

We also need a consequence for those who are asked to test and who are not in a tower or hotel quarantine.

Personally I think that anti-vaxxers should face strict consequences too (Obviously those with genuine medical reason excepted).
I mean take taxes. It benefits the community that all who are required to pay taxes have to do so. I can't just say, oh I don't want to pay my tax.

Why would I just say they did not not reveal that they were tested, and not did not reveal the more serious matter that they were positive?

I don't know, but your first post on this particular subject was written just like Pushka interpreted it. I don't think there is a need to make a big thing about it.

[removed off-topic content]

I don’t think it is unreasonable to give people a choice of get tested or be quarantined. I don’t think anyone would like people being forcibly tested, but a choice like that for community good seems sensible.
