Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Despite some good measures being announced today, the gradual transition to Police state continues.

Perhaps a strong statement, but curfews on top of everything being closed and no one in or out. Yikes.

Not a supporter of curfews and restrictions to make the job of police easier.

I don’t watch them anymore so your interpretation?

From my POV it very upbeat and positive. In fact, I think this is one of her best performances.

I'm not sure what good the curfew will do, but at least it will shut the Victorians up about the so-called "soft" lockdown. Pretty sure she's doing it just to shut the critics up.

Clearly it's now lockdown until vaccinated.

Found it very odd that the police is now briefing before Health

All the speakers are very sombre, they look very serious, stressed and emotional. Dr Chant in particular.

Messaging is very blunt and direct.

In terms of messaging Gladys could be Dan Andrews today.

Agree. (at least up until Q&A anyway)

Vic press conference delayed. I have been seen conspiracy theories for months saying we'd go to 'stage 5 marshall law' at the end of August. Yes, they do normally say marshall.

I think we're watching different press conferences.

Serious, yes. Stressed and emotional? No, certainly less than other days.

Blunt and direct? yes.

Dan Andrews? Are you kidding yourself?

But overall, very positive. Vaccinate and this will be over soon is the message.

Well as a minimum Shepparton would be likely to go into to lockdown (though case details are not yet known).

Given the way wastewater has been predicting cases of late you would think Lakes Entrance too.

ie The DHHS Report last eveing.

Update: COVID-19 wastewater detections in Victoria

The Department is continuing to identify unexpected detections of COVID-19 fragments in wastewater in metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria in areas that have not recorded recent positive cases. Current areas of concern are:
Regional catchments
  • Shepparton - three repeat detections in the period of interest 9-16 August
  • Lakes Entrance - detection in the period of interest between 8-11 August
Metro catchments - residential
  • Western suburbs: New detections reported in the suburbs of Albion, Braybrook, Footscray, Seddon, St Albans, Sunshine, Sunshine North, Sunshine West, Tottenham and West Footscray - detections in the period of interest 15-17 August.
  • Collingwood - a new detection linked to the public housing tower at 240 Wellington St, Collingwood with period of interest 15-18 Aug. It has been designated a tier 2 exposure site.
  • South-eastern suburbs including Dingley Village, Keysborough, Noble Park, Springvale and Springvale South, five repeat detections in period of interest 11-18 August
Metro catchments - industrial
  • Sunshine West - repeated strong detections in the period of interest 8-18 August. The Department is working with local businesses to support with testing.

Well the jump in wild cases is problematic to getting back to zero (in any category)

Well the Police Commissioner said that the curfew is required because people are not following orders and just go out at night for parties .... lots of infringement notices. So yes it is progressive but it is people who are not doing the right thing that causes this. I don't blame them.

Pretty sure the messaging today also included many other things and behaviours that need to be done now, and quite a number of changes too.

Yes, but it was carrot forward, shall we say, with a side of stick. It was about getting through the next month when we will reach 80% first jab.

If this was Dan Andrews, it would be all stick. Gladys is often criticised for offering carrot but I think it's a much better approach.

I'd say the Shepparton issue is probably cause for the delay.

Yes but...

"I am not the type of premier that is going to be asking citizens to do things that (won't) have any effect. The fact is (curfews) will not ... reduce the number of cases."

For both NSW and VIC, and SA/QLD just a matter of time. Lockdowns lifted by beginning of first week of 2022 school term.

Cool. Give them fines.

No reason to stop a law abiding citizen taking the dog for a walk at 10pm, or a late night stroll because they can't sleep. As is the case in Victoria.

As I said, making the job of police easier.

Yes, but the Police Commissioner has officially requested it yesterday. She said it is because of the request and the reason why the request was made, so the curfew was stood up.

NSW Poilce Commissioner basically said something along the lines - should he have asked for curfew earlier? Maybe, but if he asked for a curfew a few weeks ago he would have been laughed off.

Looks like Police Commissioner asked for the curfew.

NSW CHO - "Health supported the curfew - evidence is mixed."

You can't fine someone you don't know about. They mentioned a gathering in Maroubra (not the time of day) that has generated 11 cases. If the people didn't gather in Maroubra, there wouldn't be 11 cases.

People should note that in European jurisdictions, curfews generally relate to the early closing of pubs and restaurants. Nothing to do with the infringement of personal liberty to walk around your community on the footpath that you pay for.

Dr Chant is going to crack it one day - shes over having to say the same thing every day and no improvement in 6 weeks so far.

She needs a couple of days off and not deal with the same questions/reporters every single day.
