Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Noting that 9 of the 10 new cases are linked to Bondi cluster and 8 out the 10 people were already in isolation as were close household contacts.

From ABC Blog:

"Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant said there were really only two cases that officials were concerned about, transmission-wise. One is a woman in her 20s, the other is that student at the Saint Charles primary school in Waverly. "

And from SMH:

Ms Berejiklian said all but one of the new cases are linked to existing cases and a year 3 student who attends St Charles Primary School in Waverley is the mystery one. Nine of the 10 cases are close contacts or linked to previous clusters.

Of the three new locally reported cases to 8pm on Monday night all are close contacts or linked to previous clusters, they include a woman in her 60s from the Illawarra and a woman in her 40s from Sydney’s northern suburbs, both are close contacts of a previously reported case and in isolation. Another case is a woman in her 20s from the east. She is linked to the Bondi cluster.

Of the seven locally acquired cases notified overnight six are household contacts of previous cases who have been in isolation.

Very happy to see check ins at supermarkets/retail finally made mandatory - never understood why retail was optional when hospitality was mandatory, given have been so many retail infections like the 31 from BWS Berala.

Like anything that is mandatory unless enforced it's not mandatory at all. I asked Woolworths staff what is the point of the security guard posted at the Bourke Street Surry Hills store if he doesn't enforce mask wearing, and the staff member could not have cared less about it.

Time for some actual enforcement, NSW Government. Lock down a few supermarkets with NSW Police and go person by person to check compliance with masks and checkins and you'll see actual compliance.

Given the geographic spread

Just to clarify transmission has only occurred at 3 locations. Whilst there are exposure sites across a wider area, public infection pretty much in the east or in homes outside there.

"The Bondi cluster has involved three key transmission events: at Westfield Bondi Junction on the weekend of June 12 and 13, at Vaucluse’s Belle Cafe on the same weekend and at the Tempe Salvos store, where one case worked, last week."

During NB cluster, my local coles had a staff member on the door refusing entry to adults who werent masked (had free masks in case you forgot) and controlling numbers allowed in or out.

This is what should happen... but the amount of apathy shown by people who will also be directly impacted by a lockdown (think hospo workers) is remarkable.

I'm curious that Gladys described mandatory check in at retail as an Australian first....what nuance am I missing?
You missed the fact that NSW was indeed the first to introduce Mandatory QR check in on 23/11/20.
WA- 5/12/20,
SA- 14/12/20.
Victoria 23/4/21.
QLD- 1/5/21
Tas - 1/5/21. Though they had had their check in app for over 6 months but only mandatory from 1/5.

Expect that if you read further into it

From 1 January 2021, it will be mandatory for hospitality venues and hairdressers in NSW to use the NSW Government’s COVID Safe Check-in QR code to electronically register customer contact details.

Retail stores haven’t been mandatory and Gladys even stated that recently.
As I have experienced in recent trips, it was not enforced at shops at all

I have seen it on public toilets here in Melbourne. It's a little confronting, to be honest...

Have seen very good compliance at supermarkets, etc.

In my travels I have found the use was best in NSW followed by Tasmania.
QLD and WA hopeless.
Not been to SA or Victoria.
But just my observations.

No, as mentioned, my comment was specifically in reference to check in at retail stores.

Well perhaps now the virus is double ‘fleeting’ in NSW and single ‘fleeting’ in VIC and QLD, making retail compulsory is a great idea... 🤪

Whatever each state is doing, the states and the federal government should have all got together, at latest by June 2020, to develop a single system for deployment across Australia with consistent rules, and perhaps the state borders may have been more elastic.

Oh but wait the population ... . big brother ... privacy. Sporadic lockdowns are much better than invasion of privacy.

These are somewhat different to my observations.

I have found dramatic differences between areas and areas of certain towns throughout Vic, NSW, ACT and Qld. My experience has Queensland on the whole with about the same level of conformity as NSW.

People in Victoria are slowly coming around to the concept.

Well I wouldnt be surprised if other states slam the door on NSW again, just like last Christmas and New Year. That's why I am weary of travelling interstate during school holidays.

From my reading of various AFFers' interactions, it seems that SA was actually first in Australia to make QR code check in mandatory for all retail locations. NSW was probably first in Australia to make QR code check in mandatory for a specified segment

Once SA had it it had to be used everywhere.

I think we've seen enough heavy handed police in other states during this pandemic.

I for one am grateful to live in the free state of NSW.
