Aussies are catching more domestic flights than ever before with statistics showing 42.5m people caught domestic flights last financial year...

and no wonder the airlines don't want to reduce the surcharges

It's not suprising. Most planes I've been on domestically in the last 6 months or so have just about been chockers.

However, I wonder if the current sets of interest rate rises will cause a downturn in the number of flights/holidays taken for leisure purposes.

That could see some good specials next year and reduction in fuel surcharges to help spur demand.

Hmm.. 20m people living in Australia plus 5.5 million tourists , yet 42.5m people took domestic flights; there are a lot of illegal immigrants around :)

Do the bogans filling up JetStar flights count as "people"?

Hang on Scott, you often state that you prefer JQ to fly from NTL to either BNE or MEL (can't say I blame you, looking at the skeds and prices).

What is this saying about *YOU*?

I am not surprised at this statistic. Even (or especially) in regional areas pax numbers are outstripping terminal facilities. I know my children (all adults) use air travel the way I used bus or train when I was thier age. Although they do much travel for business (usually QF in J) they also do a lot for pleasure (usually JQ or DJ). In a country like Australia it makes sense. Fly and rent a car when you reach your destination. Don't drive:!:

We lose sense of distance in a single country as large as Australia. If someone asked you tomorrow to drive from Sydney to Melbourne, would there be much hesitation or consideration? probably not, you'd just hop in a car and drive it.

Whereas if that were Europe, it'd be a serious journey through several different countries.
Its one reason why high speed rail travel will take a long time to happen in Australia. We don't have enough populated centres outside the big cities to make the $/km of construction & maintenance of high speed rail lines affordable.

I know that I would much rather fly than drive. Even living in Albury for the last four years, I have never driven to SYD - I have always flown, even for pleasure. Although the road is pretty good from just after Gundagai to SYD, I don't like it. Next week my wife and I are moving back to Ballina and we will have to drive the 1350 km from ABX to BNK not looking forward to it, especially as I have to fly back to ABX, finish off the year and then drive the other car back. Give me seat 1D in a Dash 8-300 anytime:!:

I am always bemused by this.

When in the UK, I base myself in Liverpool with my aunt. I think nothing about popping across to Manchester or York, or down to London, or up to Glasgow, for a few hours. The distance is nothing.

For them, this would be a major trip, and they comment as such. "Good Lord, you aren't going all that way for just a few hours, are you?" is an often asked question.

Statistically what would be the AFF members or FT members contribution to the final total?

Rounding error I'd guess.

25 domestic australia flights for me.
I notice you saw the need to clarify the type of domestic flights included in your tally :p

Of course, even QF domestic wouldn't be a precise answer.

Plenty of other domestic flights too (not just NZ and Australia).
