ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

Hey folks.

Individual tax payer here with a chunky ATO bill to settle. I managed to clear something similar last year with a huge stack of the $250 fee-free Coles Mastercards but that offer seems to have vanished.

Does anyone know if you can use Qantas Pay to pay the ATO and earn the 1pt per $4?
If you can, it should (?) be fee free.

Compared to the 2% ish options elsewhere for individuals using an AMEX (I don't have Zip) it seems like a reasonable deal. Accumulate a bunch of points at no cost.

Has anyone done it before?

Do you use pay.com.au to pay personal tax or business tax? Last time I look at their service it did not seem to offer a pathway for personal PAYG tax payments.
Primarily business but I have paid personal tax bills with it too. Maybe you need to set it up as a business account first I’m not sure but that’s how I set mine up first.

This is from the Qantas Pay PDS. No free lunches, unfortunately.

Get a good US card .
I've never understood this concept
Pay an Australian bill with a US card, there will be international transaction fees.
Then will be Forex fees, paying off the US card from an Aussie bank account.
Surely that will make the points hugely expensive?

Unless you have an income source in USA?

No forex fees on most US cards. US cards award sign-up bonuses that an Australian card user could only dream of.

Do you happen to know any resources for getting a US card or applying from AU?

Lots of reading but a great source

Has anyone here actually applied this strategy successfully?

Easy enough to test; do a round figure (like $5) donation to red cross, and see what it appears as on your statement. Compare to the mid rate of the exchange rate that day, and you have your answer.

I just did this the other way round (donated in US$, exchange rate today is 0.6535). I'll report back once it appears on my statement.
