I think this thread is so important it needs to be bumped.

I paid another few thousand off my 2007/08 tax bill, but I am happier to pay it as I get frequent flyer miles for the trouble.

If you have a large bill to pay from the tax office then you can ring them up and ask for an extension; mine originally was over $10,000 and rung up to get it split up, into more bite size pieces.

Actually that's overkill unless you really need an extension as you can just do multiple $10k payments one after the other, as I and others have successfully done.

Yes I really needed an extension; not everyone has a spare > $10,000 to pay their tax in one hit. :(

The ATO scheme to pay tax due via credit cards has now been slammed by consumer groups:

Credit card tax payment trial angers consumer groups | The Courier-Mail

Yep, people shouldn't be allowed to pay tax via credit card, because it could lead them into a debt trap...
Maybe they should have obtained a quote from a satisfied taxpayer who moves the tax to the cc before paying ... with the 'fee' being tax deductible they can be much better off in rewards point currency.

I submitted a comment earlier today - obviously not considered pertinent/useful as there is a 3:31pm one now showing.

Has anyone successfully used this in the past few days to pay via Amex? I've been trying for 2 days now and it keeps failing with "Your financial institution is temporarily unavailable".

I did a payment with Amex this morning without any problems.

I've used Amex a couple of times via Cabcharge ove rthe last two days, all worked OK.

Precisely what i was thinking.... But i do hope it hangs around for a few more weeks so i can pay bas on it next month...

What would happen if you transferred all the money you had to pay over to your CC to pay for it and then they didnt acccept it and you couldnt pay it any other way(for those of us who have tax bills bigger than our CC limits)?

Hmm thanks for the feedback. I tried three times over 2 days to pay $10k and it failed all three times, but was just now able to pay 2x$5k with no problems. Although something strange does seem to have happened as Amex online shows $10k less available credit than I should have (without a matching charge showing up on the statement). Very odd...

Did you try exactly $10k (ie. $10,000.00)? Or $10,xx_.xx?

It has a hard limit of $10k per transaction (although wont stop you doing multiple transactions), although you'd think it'd allow $10,000.00 and not block to $9999.99.

Yes I did, but I have successfully paid $10000 before so I don't think it would be that. Who knows though! I'm just hoping the 3 failed attempts don't all end up showing up on my Amex bill

I was wondering how it went in using non AMEX cc to pay the taxes to the ATO.

Non-AMEX cc's tend have a clause excluding reward points for government fees, taxes and charges.

I would appreciate it if you could list any non-AMEX cards that worked, I am trying to find a non-AMEX cc for paying government charges and taxes to another Australian government agency.

Thanks

Johno
