ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

same here albyd.

Guess the biggest unknown is what will happen to the value of FF points once we start flying again. I don’t think airline shareholders will be the only ones to take some pain.

I received the KF 15% bonus email too. With 3 year expiry and unusually having so many points over there already, I’m reluctant to take it up.

We have about 7 figures to go on Dragon ATO payments...
And here I was thinking my paltry 5 figure ATO payments were racking up the points! 😂

Shame about Dragon winding things up with the ATO. I'll be sticking with my card from the West, which I can thankfully still use for my quarterly QFF points boost from Canberra.

Well our points / miles really grew seeing our last Suites ride was last March. We got home on Qatar using my AA Miles when we couldn’t get a human to answer the phone in London.
Now i have boosted family accounts so it may be a while before we need to use any of our stash for them.

I just saw that Visa domestic card on ATO payment site is now 0.93% when it used to be 0.78%? It kind of makes it redundant doesn't it then to try and make payments before the Dragon changes its willingness to ascribe points for ATO payments in early Dec? (given YP is 1% GST excl)
Totally agree. The new ATO rate v YP makes little difference to the cost of a J return to Europe now! ~~ $100 or so for me

Once St George is slain by the Dragon will there be anyone left to fight with ATO or Government payments that can't be paid through Australia Post ?
I had a 6 figure sum to pay to the ATO next May, getting SFA in the Bank so I have simply withdrawn the money from the online saver earning .55 % pa and prepaid the ATO to help Mr Frydenberg top up someones Jobkeeper/Maker/Seeker payments.
I cannot understand this move by the Card Companies. If it is going to cost with no benefit in the future I will simply BPay at no cost and probably cancel the card.
How does that make sense. ?
If there is a cost then pass it on but at least give people the option so everyone WINS, or do I see it wrong ?
I don't get offended by straight answers.

Yes it will finish for all of us by December 9th. I am reloading our two cards for our last hurrah with the fiscal fiend. It will be a lot if we prepay some of it.
Not only the ATO.
As I understand it....ALL Government payments which I take to mean Land Tax, rates, Registrations etc

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I don’t usually read the notices on my statements, went back and had a look:
WE WILL TREAT ANY TRANSACTION THAT THE CARD SCHEME (VISA OR MASTERCARD) TELLS US IS GOVERNMENT RELATED AS A GOVERNMENT RELATED PAYMENT. FROM 9 DECEMBER 2020, POINTS WILL NO LONGER BE EARNED FOR PURCHASES OR PAYMENTS TO A LOCAL, STATE OR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ENTITY OR GOVERNMENT RELATED AGENCY, INCLUDING TO THE AUSTRALIAN TAX OFFICE, AUSTRALIA POST OR TO MOTOR VEHICLE REGISTRIES.

Was bound to happen eventually which is a great shame. Appears to be more wide ranging and will likely include AP payments since everyone else treats them as ‘government’.Guess it’s now onto the payment processors until that gets shut down then. I’m not sure if there’s any value left on points chasing after that.

Actually I PP a lot through AP and they all get full points. 1.25/$

We have been paying 12 months of land tax, shire rates and stuff like that as Dragon will stop paying Amplify points. We figure that Monday December 7th will be the last clear day to use the card for government charges so that allows a final payroll taxes to get done. All of our family will have cards loaded with warehoused points as a result of this thread so thank you js for getting us started on ATO.
We can still pay other commercial accounts but they are nowhere near the amounts of ATO and other government bills that roll in the door.

I think the issue is after the cut off they won’t get any points at all through AP.
AP is aust post?

I don't see the cut off date as important anymore since ato has increased rate for visa to be almost same as paying via yp

That’s right.

Agree it’s pretty high now. I’ll be looking at the payment processors. Managed a reasonable payment during the Amex Double covid promo. Less viable now until we know what our FF points are worth post covid and how hard it will be to redeem them as airlines will want to sell the tickets for revenue fares and use the points as a form of Financing since they’ll need to make them good in the future but who knows at what rate, etc.

I started paying my taxes in Feb 2011 with a credit card (looking back in the early days of the thread :) ) and was a little late to the party... js started the thread in April 2009. I have been through many credit cards as they all slowly shut the loophole, and the chapter ends on Dec 9 when the last credit card, StG closes the loophole. js last posted online in May 2011 and his profile says he is from Japan. We all should hold a glass to toast his post back in 2009!
