ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

Those using Visa or MasterCard might find an unpleasant surprise

Note: A card payment fee[SUP]*[/SUP] applies:
  • 0.54% for VISA and MasterCard payments and
  • 1.45% for American Express payments.
coughs....first it was the card providers screwing us, now it is the ATO!!:evil:

The ATO will miss me when I am gone JohnM. This thread is just a game for me and sometimes Mrscove says just pay for a ticket or two.
I did that for the QF double status offer and it was like an Indian wrestle with my warped mind. Mrscove won and she loves WP status.
Traveling on points rather than cash tends to be addictive and I had to drop caffeine as I was addicted to it.
That new 0.54% rate was a surprise change for October,2016.
I do hope you are enjoying the Hunter Valley as a temporary sea change.

I doubt it's the ATO ... as per: https://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/...rmsandconditions#Creditcardtermsandconditions

[h=3]Card payment fee[/h] A card payment fee may apply to card payments to the ATO. The fee is:

  • a percentage of the amount being paid, based on the type of card used
  • equal to the fee we incur from our banker
  • not subject to GST.
I suspect it's "our Banker" (AKA Credit Card providers) who have lifted the rate ...

Glad the account I'm using gives me the choice between a Mastercard and Amex. Mastercard used to cost me 0.84c/Velocity Point and the Amex was 0.97c/Velocity Point (both before tax) with the Amex delivering three times the number of points per ATO dollar. Mastercard now increasing to 1.08c/Velocity Point which makes the Amex the clear winner :) Only problem is there's a 300,000 annual points cap which will be hit a lot sooner with the Amex so I'll need a new backup card early next year...

Guys what are payment options that earn points these days ?
Used to rely on ANZ for many years, but now that that's not a goer, what's the next best alternative (for QF points) ?

Thanks

been a while since I read this thread - couple of questions if you would please folks1. is there a method to pay NSW stamp duty by C/C? Their website suggests no for stamp duty (Duties | Office of State Revenue) but wondering if there's a workaround. PM me if needs be.2. is the NAB qantas business choice card now dead for ATO payments? does anyone know when it changed?

I haven't found a way to pay Stamp duty to the NSW OSR - apparently the guy I spoke to referred to it as a 'different business' (with a captive audience).
I recall reading a post by another member some time back that they would pay it through their solicitor and put it through the solicitor's eftpos machine - might work assuming your solicitor cooperates and can agree to a 'reasonable' merchant fee.

Business cards don't seem to have all been caught up in the new "fairer" regime... best suggestion would be to make a small test transaction to confirm? Please report back :)

we didn't get award points since about July so wondering when it happened. (i just read the T&C's and it's hidden in there - those T&C's were effective July, along with the $100k cap...)

might give this a crack. can't see them paying anything < 1% MSF at which point it becomes questionable value me thinks given the citi deval.

It seems that ATO have just jacked up the card payment fee (Visa/MC) to 0.54% from previously 0.42%. Still somewhat profitable though... so I still pay with CC.

Edit: ah, it seems to have been discussed above :D
