ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

Damn it!

Got any recommendations? Is it worth getting a new card just to pay off tax bill? I am 40k KrisFlyer points short of a redeem

You could get a new Amex Velocity Platinum credit card to qualify for some bonus Velocity sign on points that you can then transfer to Kris Flyer. If you get someone to refer you they get 20,000 points as well. The cost is $349 with a free flight and a good sign on. Pretty useless for ATO at half a point per dollar so a full point would cost 2.9 cents.

Horrible idea at getting half a point a dollar for Amex!!!
If you want to use Amex, then get the Velocity Escape amex

No annual fee, 1 point per dollar velocity (Plus 7500 bonus points)

To get your sign on points you could use your new Amex Velocity Platinum to pay $500 of ATO at a cost of $14.50. Now you have the sign on plus 250 points a referral person has 20,000 and you have a free return flight for a total cost of 349 plus 14.50. Go to the Amex Velocity Platinum thread to pick up a referral and everyone is smiling.
The Velocity points can transfer to Kris Flyer at 0.666 rate when you need them.
I am unsure if you can get 80,000 sign on and I believe the 110,000 is gone. We had a rush at our offices and I think we had many sign on.

I just had 4 new tax bills arrive. Quite inconvenient with Bankwest World reducing the earn rate. The good news is I prepaid 2 of these 4 and the balances are what I would call modest.
We are days away from the start of 26 fortnightly payments of group tax. I tried to get our business removed from this new red tape without success so our office is now lumbered with 38 ATO remittances a year. With multiple partners we might give them about 152 credit card payments a year so someone in their office has something to do.

cove, I thought that if one over pays / prepays, it just comes back as a cheque to you in the mail? Prepay works OK with regard to points which are retained?

You get refunded by electronic transfer if the ATO deem you to be eligible for that refund. I wouldn't use this idea to pick up millions of frequent flyer points.
I did overpay the fiscal fiend last year when I had my tax accountant retire. The electronic refund came back in about 2 weeks. I did earn and keep those points.

Thanks Cove, but I just got the platinum charge card. That's where the 120k came from. So it seems like the fastest way to get 40k would be from referrals.
What are my chances of getting a couple of referrals if I posted my link in that referral thread?

Many AFFers went for the 110,000/20,000 referral so I don't have anyone left from our business group. I had it so our managers could get those referrals and they also enrolled their family members.
You may as well have an entry in that thread or you could sign up one or two relatives and do a family transfer. That would be quicker. I had 2 sons I could consider and Mrscove was ineligible. I tried to put Mrscove in and she received a phone call asking the reason she wanted the card and then they said something like you have got to be kidding.
I think that the freight company Aurizon takes an Amex card and so does Lumo Energy. The translation cost may be beyond the pain barrier and our family don't need expensive points right now and probably ever.

Apparently Labor wants 16 billion to cover their plans. Looks like they will need all those folks who received $900 from Ruddd/ Swan government to hand that money back.

We have Q, C USA x 2, WBC Kris Plat Amex x2 ,BW World and BW Plat and if really desperate WBC Black Alt Amex. My BW Plat is close to the cap.
Woolies is gone for us as is WBC Earth , HSBC, Citibank Australia and ANZ Black. The list of the goners is growing and I never had any CBA nor NAB CCs.

Agreed, but has anyone tried Bank Australia yet? If it's a goer, spreading the love may extended the life of Q.

Would be interesting to see if this card pays points for ATO. I can't see anything on their website about capping ?? Anyone know whether they do or don't ??

Just a question:

Can you put a card into credit to pay off a tax bill and still receive points? I've always been unsure of this and never tried as I thought it would raise some sort of red flags somewhere. The card in question is the Westpac Black.

I know I've asked this and it's been answered with mostly yes'. I've only done this with a small'ish figure, put the card in credit of about 2-3 times the credit limit. I've got a tax bill which is 12 times my credit limit, 6 figures. Should I put it all into my card and pay off in one hit or put it in a linked account and pay it off in multiple payments?
The card is a westpac black again.
