Jetstar takes aim at Top End

March 02, 2006

JETSTAR is launching its Top End invasion with $99 one-way fares on direct flights to Darwin from Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide.

But the no-frills carrier's entry into the market will lead to Qantas ditching its Melbourne-Darwin service.

From May 1, Jetstar will fly the Melbourne and Brisbane return services six times a week, with twice-weekly flights to Adelaide.

Daily flights between Melbourne and Darwin will be introduced from July 1.

Qantas will continue to fly daily services on the Brisbane and Adelaide routes. But once the $99 launch sale ends at midnight tomorrow, one-way fares will rise to $179 for restricted Jetsaver tickets and $499 for unrestricted JetFlex tickets that earn equivalent frequent flyer points to full economy Qantas fares.

They were advertising this $99 Brisbane-Darwin fare on TV in Brisbane last night. Its a good thing I have no need to go to Darwin in the near future :D .

Never having been to Darwin, now I'm wondering if I should try to fit it in while its still served by QF mainline. When is a good time of year to visit?

Best time of year to visit Darwin is when the weather forcast is not 33 degrees with an afternoon thunderstorm. Hmmm, looks like Darwin is going to have to be an overnight transit. The overnight weather forecast is 32 degrees, fine and humid.

Isn't there the odd international service that plies the route?

oz_mark you are correct. The only time I've been to Darwin I went on an international QF flight that left Melbourne, stopped in Adelaide and then again Darwin (which I left).

Can't recall the final destination however it's the only time I've caught an international flight for a dom destination and I have to say it was very good (but not stopping at Adelaide - the INT QP was terrible at the time Oct 2003)

Lucky I am flying on QF in early June. SYD-ADL-DRW-ADL-SYD for $433.83 return and 70SC's.

On Jetstar $499 one way to earn status credits and points. Thanks but no thanks.

Would recommend the airport hotel if you are thinking of going, very nice for the money and new!

Indeed. Some top-enders might think this is great news but it's not. I spent too much time on those red eye flights anyway but 4.5h on JETSTAR? No thanks. And imagine all those well-paid public servants up there getting used to flying cattle class 8)

Could be a good chance to connect from a $99 MEL-DRW onto a cheap Tiger DRW-SIN. Worth remembering DJ match JQ's sale fares, so one doesn't nessisarily have to suffer through Deathstar
