Thanks everybody for your good advice and interpretations. I think ... they link their passes to their onward booking, a day room to stash the bags, and off to the big Buddha. Back to check in and into the lounge for dinner. Ca va?

Or, do the Airtrain to town and InTown check in.

As they have some time in HKG on the way over, in transit it could be a comfortable trip up to the Buddha and a spot of lunch,. They won’t fit that into the first stopover.

Not sure how often they may have been to Hong Kong, but with 9 hours, you should be able to get far more out of it than just the cable car and the Buddha.

For me, I would probably agree fully with @amaroo and pay the fee to check the hand luggage (combining if you feel the urge).

I think this thread started with a reference to HLO, but then came across checked baggage. Assuming what is happening is checked + hand luggage, I would work out they actually want to carry with them (presume there will be some day pack, bag etc. with camera, passport etc.), pay to store any other hand luggage, then take the rest on MTR into Hong Kong itself. Check the bags back in at the in town check in, and then explore multiple parts of Hong Kong.

If it is clear, a trip up to the Peak will probably be more interesting than the Buddha. Even if not clear, the ferry on the Harbour is cheap and worth doing. Any number of places to visit on either the island, or Kowloon (mid-levels, Ladies Market in Mong Kok), etc.

EDIT

Saw the update after finishing. If they have already spent time in HK on the way out, that changes things a bit. They will need to check weather before attempting the Buddha. If it is too windy, the cable car won't be running.

Yes sorry, I was referring to HL as I had hoped checked luggage would not come into play. I’ll tell them to add the weather forecast into the decision-making on arrival. Could be typhoon time midyear.

Just confirming, doing a bag drop at HKG a/port, it opens 3 hours before flight and not any earlier?

I don't believe BA will though-check bags unless it's the one PNR. They wouldn't for me, anyhow!
I've had multiple successes at the airside transfer desk to check through luggage but some have mentioned they've been unsuccessful. The 9 hour connection could be an issue.

These guys have over 24 hours stopover so they will be collecting their bags, and then departing the next day on QF.
The QF website says the check-in is open three hours before departure. I just wondered if that is enforced or are staff there earlier accepting bags?

No recent personal experience with QF from HKG but my understanding from others is that check in is only opened 3 hours before the flight.
They could consider the early check in and bag drop in town at Kowloon or HK Stations
