Friends have about 9 hours in HKG and asked me if there’s a QF Y lounge with a luggage locker available for their HLO. I have seen them in the Pier, but don’t know about Y lounges. Any advice plse?

I should mention they’re planning to use 2 QF lounge passes. Will that work?

They want to spend 9 hours airside?

Shouldn't they be able to access the CX lounges before the QF flight with their BA J boarding passes?

No, Will go out but wish to store their HLO in a lounge - maybe I’m not thinking this through. That’s interesting re the CX lounge with a BA J BP.

So are your friends planning to spend nine hours in the lounge?
If they're on one PNR they should get all their BPs at the origin and easily go through the transit gate. Otherwise they'll have to check in on-line and have the next lot of BPs.

Having seen the clarifying post above they'll be sent landside without going to the lounges.

So they'll need to look for lockers and then head into Hong Kong or where-ever.

I don't know if you can use your arrival BP when travelling on a different PNR for the departure flight.

I think that normal QF lounge passes for Y passengers are accepted only at the QF lounge, not the CX ones, which to my knowledge doesn't have lockers at HKG. Are they planning on leaving the airport during the 9 hours? On the ground side, there is a luggage storage option in Terminal 2, which is really the same terminal as Terminal 1, it's just a different set of check-in counters, and there's bridges connecting it to the Terminal 1 areas.

Thanks for all your comments. They are different PNRs booked through QF. They’ll consider a day room and stash the luggage there. Just to clarify, when they come back to the airport with their to QF lounge passes on Y, which lounge should they head toward?

Exactly - lounge access will only be available after transit - so no use for storage. Any lounge offered "facility" will likely only be shelves, and so not secure anyway.

On the ground side, there is a luggage storage option in Terminal 2

See the HKG airport website here for details. If using HLO and as the charge is per piece per hour (or day), if there are multiple carry on pieces, consider investing in one of those lovely red-white-blue "bags" to convert multiple pieces into one.....

Have used this luggage facility before - but more for storing large checked items not needed whilst in Hong Kong for a couple of days.

QF lounge passes on Y, which lounge should they head toward?

Flying on QF in Y with a QF lounge pass - there is only one option - the QF lounge. (the only alternative is to not use the lounge pass, and consider a pay-in or PP lounge).

As the QF flight from HKG is to SYD, then their BA J boarding passes wouldn't give them access to any OW lounge, as the access rules only permit access to lounges after a J long haul (am assuming they have probably come from LHR or other qualifying long haul destination, with long haul being defined as 5 hours duration or longer) connecting to a domestic or International short haul. As the QF flight is also long haul, then no luck on lounge access, regardless of whether the original BA flight was long haul or not.

Lounge access should be ok based on OW rules..

  • Connecting between oneworld marketed and operated flights:
    • First and Business Class customers connecting on the same day of travel, or before 6am the following day, can access the lounge when travelling between an international long haul (a oneworld international long haul flight is defined as an international flight marketed and operated by any oneworld carrier with a scheduled flight time longer than 5 hours) and an international short haul or domestic flight (and vice-versa).
    • Lounge access will be determined on the international long haul ticketed flight (either First of Business Class) regardless of the ticketed class of travel on the international short haul or domestic flight.
    • You must be prepared to show your boarding pass or itinerary showing travel in First or Business class on the international long haul flight, in order to access the lounge before your international short haul or domestic flight.

I has assumed that their BA-QF checked bags would be interlinked, is that correct? Should they call QF to get the two PNRs cross referenced - both were booked by QF?
Good tip re amalgamated HL. :)

Hmm, BA is J long haul connecting to QF Y . These rules keep referring to short haul.
I think they’re going to need some of these rules as printouts when they turn up at the lounge.

I don't think so - the QF flight is not International Short Haul - it is also a Long haul.

Not likely on different PNRs, especially with BA doing the check in. They were the ones that instigated the change to stop doing so.

It is likely to be a collect bags and recheck. Given the 9 hour layover, and the QF Y ticket, check in won't be available for quite a while.

This will leave two options:
1. Leave all the luggage in storage (and pay for the privilege per bag).
2. Lug the checked baggage on the MTR to Kowloon of Central for the in-town check-in. As it sounds like they are heading into town anyway, this is probably the preferred option.

These rules keep referring to short haul.
I am afraid that is why they won't get access - the rules give access after a long flight before a "trivial" further flight - not before another long flight.

QF lounge on the QF passes will be the way to go (make sure they link them electronically, assuming they are the electronic passes).

Yeah, having another read the longer than 5 hours clause sort of defines the dif between LH and SH flight.

They might be better off catching the Airport Express train into HKG city. There they could check-in early for their Qantas flight, with luggage, and it seems they have baggage storage there too.

A single day return ticket is usually the cheapest:

Doesn't HKG have a special arrangement where you can get your bags re-checked by the airport even if not originally planned to do so, and you don't want to leave the transit area? Or is that only if you're transferring to a mainland ferry, not another flight?
