Not too many options for getting to South America, at least without a big detour through US.

LAN, Aerolineas Argentinas, and Air Tahiti Nui (not sure whether they fly between Tahiti & SA - probably do but if not then LAN does).

Aerolineas doesnt belong to any alliances, so presuming miles are important that leaves LAN.

How many people travelling? What class of travel are you looking at? If business or first then a RTW is likely to be cheaper (and provides option for significant additional travel) as round trip fares to South America in the premium cabins are very high. However, the RTW books into discounted fare classes "A" for first and "D" for business which may not be available much. (First in particular very difficult with only 5 F seats per flight.)

Where in South America are you visiting? LAN has good coverage in some areas but not others. In terms of alliances, Varig is the other main airline in South America (with *A) and has good coverage in Brazil etc but less in other areas.

Perhaps ozstamps could comment on United fares (via US of course)?

As Kiwi Flyer has mentions, not all that many options for South America.

Note that there are a few types of RTW fares. There are the standard alliance offerings from OneWorld and Star Alliance, which provide maximum flexibility and coverage over their entire alliance routes. Then there are special deals offered by specific airlines, which are often less expensive but more restrictive and sometimes short-term special deals.

To include South America, you are likely to be restricted to the standard OneWorld or Star Alliance RTW products.

The cheapest way to buy the OneWorld RTW products (OneWorld Explorer and Global Explorer) is to call American Airlines directly, and ask for the Round the World Desk. The base fare cost is always the same (between calling an airline directly or using a travel agent), but AA do not include the fuel surcharges that are often added by other airlines. And the AA RTW desk is very knowledgeable and efficient when it comes to the OneWorld products.

Kiwi Flyer can provide more info on the Star Alliance RTW products, which I understand are more like the OneWorld Global Explorer, being mileage based. The OneWorld Explorer is based on the number of continents visited.

Yes NM, *A RTWs are mileage based. As no direct flights across to South America you're stuck with going via US or Canada.

Also various mixed carrier options - but these are very restrictive (no codeshares, usually no backtracking allowed which in practice means some routes are off limits, etc).

I havent been to South America yet, but almost certainly will do on a RTW of some description. For *A RTWs this will be easier once South African Airlines joins (should be next year), which will save having to route via Europe between Asia/Africa and South America.

NM, does this apply to ringing AA in Australia or do you need to call the US to access the RTW desk? And is it valid for RTW fares/itineraries originating in Australia?

Would seem (everything else being equal) to be the way to go if that is the case.

Cheers.

I am not sure if you can get to the RTW desk via AA Australia. I have a US phone here on my desk in Brisbane, so can make US 1800 calls for no cost and very convenient. But I am sure if you call AA in Australia, they can answer your question with complete authority :p .

tuapekastar, ring AA Reservations on 1300 650 747. I don't know whether they have a RTW desk here - but two of the CSA's that I've dealt with have been really good - Kirsty (reception) [has been with AA 5 years] and Rita. Also spoken to Sandra who was good, and Therese (but found her surly).

Be very careful with advice for flights for South America. Where and when do you want to go? Add ons in South America are extremely expensive - I should know! I travel there at least 4 times a year for business - and have done so for the last 17 years.

Tell me the above, and I'll tell you what I would do on my limited knowledge (it is limited to my own experience - which may very well be wrong for you). South America has a lot of countries!!! And some are very big as you probably know.

Good luck - I'll help if I can.

:D

Thanks Lindsay, details squirrelled away and will follow up in the future when itinerary is firmed up (and post the outcome)

Where are you planning to go in South America? There's a direct Sydney-Santiago (via Auckland) flight on LAN/QF codeshare, and a Sydney-Buenos Aires flight on Aerolineas. On a RTW flight, you could fly from Sydney to Santiago, and connect to LAN's network there. From there, you could fly to the US, or fly to Europe on Iberia (to Madrid) or BA to London, and from there to Perth.

Very keen is the best way to describe it.

If it was Brazil, Italy, Germany you were going to watch then maybe worth it. But the socceroos.

Save your money and the dissapointment!!!!!!!!! :D

Maybe a Circle Pacific type fare would work. These start from around AU$3000+taxes.

That game is scheduled for Novermber 12th SA time.

However, I do not like your chances; LA800 AKL - SCL is 9th November is showing L0, so that is not available.

To include South America in a OneWorld Circle Pacific fare, you need the LCIR29SA fare type (assuming economy class travel), and that price is A$4399 plus taxes/chargers etc.

A 29,000 mile OneWorld Global Explorer or a 4 continent OneWorld Explorer fare could possibly fit the itinerary (depending on just where in SA you need to go for the match), and since its off-peak time, that would be A$2939 + taxes/charges etc. So in this case its way better value than the Circle Pacific fare.

But as serfty has pointed out, these fares are all booked in L and the LAN flight is notorious for not having any L availability. You could waitlist on the QF codeshare flight number as well.

Being a mad keen football (the correct traditional way to describe it, not soccer) fan, I can understand the desire ozziemuzza.

I hope that Chile are the team we play - Uraguay and Columbia have to play Brasil and Argentina (best of luck beating those two teams). I would hate to have to play against Uraguay again (remembering the disappointment last time)....

Didn't think the 5-0 result against Jamaica was a worthwhile run for our team (and with only 7,000 in attendance, a poor showing from the local expat community in London)...although it will give me something to talk about with the locals when I'm in Jamaica in Dec/Jan.

And I thought the correct term to describe someone fanatical about Association Football was Association Football fan :)

I'd go along with the idea of a One World Explorer ticket for this

The LCIR29SA fare is equally valid ex-PER as ex-SYD. You can route something like SYD-PER-SCL-DFW-NRT-PER. This is only 25,317 miles, so you can add some more sectors or route back via HKG on CX if you prefer. If it was to be in business class, then I would take the CX option, but in economy the AA 777 may be a better option.

However, given the cost of LCIR29SA from Australia, it is probably better to go for a LONE4 anyway, and keep some domestic Australia sectors up your sleeve for a freeby holiday to ADL or BME some time in the next 12 months.

this is fantastic nm wow you know it all.

so who could i put this to i.e travel web site or agent .

can you recomend a couple
