I guess this might delay Turkey's entry into the EU a bit more then? Although they seem to be getting the hang of the whole unelected officials business.

:p

Poor bloody Turkey. If the bombings didn't weaken the tourism economy enough, this may finish it off.

I'm surprised they closed the airports; usually coups like things to tick along as 'normally' as possible, especially the cash generating parts.

I hope no AFFers are stranded in Turkey. Makes my recent decision to avoid travel to Turkey for the foreseeable future because of recent unrest seem wise despite others here saying otherwise ;)

Have to disagree with you on this one :) . If I hadn't just been, recent bombing there wouldn't deter me (France, Belgium etc anyone?) and countries controlled by military tend to be safer than free societies , at least for tourists. That's a selfish view of course and I abhor the coup, but I reckon things will stabilise after a week ( hope so).

There will be many travel alerts for nationals in or intending to travel to Turkey

They are still dispatching fighter jets to deal with helicopters near Parliament

Sorry but I disagree. ...one needs to minimise risks and going to Turkey now is not something I would want my family back home to worry about. I have been to Turkey for 2 weeks in the past and would love to go back...not now though! Ditto Egypt.

Waking up to the news in Croatia.
Scary as we decided to cruise here rather than Turkey this year for no special reason as I love Turkey it's people and coast line
I hope all becomes safe there very soon

The pseudo "coup" seems like a very convenient excuse to enact the purge that is now occurring across the justice and education sectors:

  • Demand for 1577 University Deans resignation

  • 30 governors fired
  • 9000 in Interior Ministry fired
  • Over 2000 judges dismissed
  • 3,000,000 civil servants banned from going on holiday
  • Talks of reenabling the death penalty
  • 1500 Finance Ministry officials suspended
  • 103 generals/admirals detained for questioning
  • ?? soldiers fired/imprisoned

  • 15200 Ministry of Education personnel fired
  • Several news/media outlets broadcast licenses withdrawn
  • Turkey's spy agency suspends 100 people
  • 492 state religious personnel removed
  • 21000 private teachers licenses revoked
  • 393 personnel in Ministry of Family and Social Policy dismissed

    All hail the new Sultan

I heard a reference to the death penalty on the ABC yesterday. Is it correct that they would not be able to join the EU if they did bring it back?
