Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

The black edge on my handset is already 'rubbing off' and showing shiny metal underneath. There has been a long list of people in online forums complaining of it, as well as a lot of 'bad' handsets out of the box (ie, damaged in factory prior to packaging).

So glad I went with white this time around!

I was tempted to, but I still think they're ugly (no offence, just my personal preference). It still reminds me of the old iMac days, where 'white was the new black'. Never was a fan of the colour (although loved the design, and the metal iMac it's morphed into now).

It will be interesting to see how this pans out. The earliest I will start to look at ditching Voda will be once I am 12 months into the contract.

@markis10 - I don't quite understand your point. Are you saying that I shouldn't comment about Vodafone's network as their experience will only be the same as mine in the same locations as me? My experience of Vodafone's network is that it is poo. As such I will choose which network to go with on that basis. I will also share my experience of the poo that is the Vodafone network with anyone that will listen. If they are sufficiently intelligent they should make their purchasing decision on something more robust than a single person's ramblings on an internet forum. The same could be said of people's experiences on airlines - my experience flying SYD-MEL and the treatment I received would only be relevant to me and should not be relied on by other people but we have an entire website dedicated to exactly that.

Voda hasn't really struggled with the I phone 5.

There has been a huge qty of people porting to Telstra and Optus due to I phone 5.

Actually I just redid the test and got 23 Mbit on voda.

Astounding.

What I am saying is when it comes to wireless your experience with performance is only relevant to those in the exact same location at the same time using the same equipment in the same manner, because its subject to contention, wireless path loss and antenna transmission and reception patterns (including polarisation), it could even come down to how you hold the phone. There are a lot more variables at play with this than are at play on a SYD MEL flight, even if you are flying QF :)

Optus and Voda are about the same price per month if you get an unlimited call plan (inc 100 & 1800 nos) in AU plus 3-5gb of data $100 pm...Telstra is $30 more.

I am with Optus and it is OK but I gather Telstra has better coverage and Voda generally ??...I suppose you get what you pay for with Telstra v Optus.

For me it is the coverage and also 4G coverage, I don't mind paying a bit more if when I need to make or receive a call it always works.

Again YMMV - I just did the speedtest at my desk in SYD CBD:

Ping 190ms (subsequent tests got that up to 2048ms)
D/L - 0.06 Mbps (retest managed to get that up to a whopping 0.11 and down to 0.01)
U/L - 0.34 Mbps

I wasn't holding the phone at the time.

In Melbourne the Optus 4G coverage is quite a bit larger and faster than Telstra!

Telstra has the best 2G, 3G and 4G coverage of any network in Australia.

As for speed, 4G on Telstra is blistering compared to their 3G (not that that would be difficult, their 3G network is so over-crowded in inner-city MEL and other cap cities, that it's often faster to drop back to 2G).

Of course, as mentioned, contention etc comes into play, even with LTE, but with limited people on the LTE network at present, it's still lightning fast. I've stuck with Telstra even though there is a small premium to Optus (that, and Optus have a very small LTE footprint at this time, but at least they're being aggressive with their rollout plans).

Not so faster from what i've seen. There's a lot of threads out there at present comparing LTE's speeds, and all the ones i've seen, Telstra is flying ahead of Optus.

Of course, comes down to time of day, contention, yadda yadda. Anything over 2-4mb and i'm happy really (it's all you really need for browsing and email on your phone; tethering of course, the faster the better).

Telstra seems to be about 15-25 Mbps in Melbourne
Optus seems to be about 20-45 Mbps

So after having owned one for 3 1/2 days now, I've got to say 'lawsuit ho' (as in 'land ho').

I understand phones will get scratches and dings, but 3 1/2 days, being treated with kid gloves, it's poor. I'll wait a week and see how it goes, but I may end up visiting a store to get it replaced (and probably every other week).

Reminds me of the first iPod nano when they ditched the mini and all the dramas because of scratching on the back.

So glad I went with white this time around!

Well never fear, when I get my black/slate iPhone 5 it'll soon be black/silver :p

Yep they are all going to vary wildly, however given that Optus and Telstra have very similar capacity it's all going to come down to who has the most people on 4G and who is downloading the most!

The amount of spectrum for the 2 4G carriers at present, (think of spectrum as freeway width)

Brisbane: 10MHz Optus vs 15MHz Telstra
Adelaide: 12.5MHz Optus vs 15MHz Telstra
Melbourne: 12.5MHz Optus vs 10MHz Telstra
Perth: 15MHz Optus vs 20MHz Telstra
Sydney: 10MHz each

What will hurt Optus is all those resellers who flog off their network cheaply and some prepaid offerings with unlimited data...

It will be very interesting in April-June 2013 when 4G 2300MHz starts to be used by Optus, as they have around 100MHz of spectrum to use here, their issue will be what handset/s will support 2300MHz....

Telstra is rumored to want to use 900MHz for 4G as well which would also be interesting

Then of course the 700MHz (Analogue TV) auction, which has been pushed back

Oh and another consideration is that in SYD and MEL - Vodafone has more 1800MHz than Optus/Telstra so could come out and surprise us all, but I am doubtful as they never got their 3G network working properly!

I work in the mobile industry as an engineer so i'm familiar with what frequency is ;)

Optus de-pref their MVNO's (ie, Virgin and AmaySIM being the major ones). You can have two identical handsets, one on Optus and one on Virgin, next to each other, and you'll most likely notice the Virgin signal is less. They also de-pref the data for the MVNO's. This is done via several methods, but even though Optus own Virgin, you'll find the actual interconnect Virgin have for data is limited.

Also, different APN's can be treated very differently on the core. MPLS TE in the core is an amazing thing :)

Well aware of all that, and as I said Telstra is limited in their 1800 offering

Keeping in mind your Telstra 50Mbps speed test was at 4:33am.... ;)
