I was advised that it could actually damage the SIM contacts with in the phone.

That was advised to us on a Teleconference with a (So Called) I phone 5 specialist.

A comment in a Wired Article referring to "scuffgate".

“I actually like the idea of the metal wearing in over time and becoming unique,” iFixit’s Kyle Wiens told Wired. “So I don’t mind the scratching.”

hahaha.

Not possible. The contacts are on the gold side, and the SIM sits flush with the base of the SIM tray. Would only be if they were on top of the SIM.

0.06mm is a very small amount. There is also no way the SIM can fall out 'upwards' and cause damage. Your so called specialist is most likely just that ;)

Am I being fussy?

The scratching around the mute button when I took the phone out of the box this morning. Purchased from the Apple online store, ordered 16th Sep delivered today.
Doesn't look like a $1000 phone to me. I'm going to take it to the Apple store and ask for a replacement :(

Definitely straight to the Apple store. That is appalling.

Sent from my iThing.
Why, because iCan.

Straight to Current Affair - I say!

What? The first reaction with flawed product is Current Affair? Did you mean to use :p rather than ? If the Apple store do not provide an exchange or refund then maybe ACA but that as you first reaction????

You should see my black one after two weeks...

The Sleep/Wake button is scuffed from just pressing it (the rubbing of the button on the body), there are wear marks around the charging plug, the chamfered edges are showing plain metal around the top of the phone (I have a slip-in sleeve type case so it's worn from just pressing it into the case). I have accidentally 'bumped' (very lightly) the phone against a ring I have on my right hand, twice, and it's taken the surface off.

I've heard that the Genius Bar replacement stock is 4-5 weeks off, so i'm holding out till demand eases, then i'll take it back. Also, the crooked text. That *#@$es me off right royally.

Was a 'tongue in cheek joke" :p

Cheers,

I took it back, long sob story. They wanted to send it back to Apple and give me a "replacement" ie. unboxed phone. Said no thankyou. Apparently a retail store cannot issue a refund for an on-line purchase ?? They have arranged for TNT to pick-up my chipped phone and I now have a new phone from the retail store and will get a refund when the chipped one is returned to Apple.

I'll definitely have to see it at Andrew's Do.

The battery kills me; I know it is a larger screen so will use slightly more energy...but if I don't use it it stays on 100% all day, 'normal usage' it is down to ~20% by the time I get home after work, and with heavy usage drops from 100% to dead within a couple of hours. Rargh!

I use LTE when I am out about as where I live/work doesn't have LTE.

I watched a movie one night on my laptop with my phone as a wireless hotspot in LTE coverage and no buffering at all and I was even getting e mails and also checking FB as well.

My big issue with LTE is battery usage and it is noticeable when I am also a heavy phone user for voice and also data.

I have a HTC One XL but I have a Iphone 5 as well.

Apple iPhone 5 gives the world a new connector: Lightning | Apple - CNET News

... The new connector is called Lightning and I'm not sure what it's particular benefits are apart from being reversible (no right way up or down) and smaller. ...
It seems Apple envisaged for themselves a particular pecuniary benefit for 'lightning'. They have placed an "Authentication" or "Controller" chip within the connector and only facilities certified by Apple will be licensed to make accessories for the new Lightning interface.

Apple reportedly tightens grip on third-party Lightning accessories | Apple - CNET News

However, what can be invented can be replicated and for those into saving a few $/£/€/¥ there is light at the end of the tunnel (although I suspect warranties may be affected):

Knockoffs of Apple's Lightning connector may be on their way | Apple - CNET News

TBH I don't know why someone would go and spend $1,000 on a phone and then try to save $20 on a spare cable? I got 1 USB-Lightning with my phone and I ordered 2 spare cables off Apple, another USB-Lightning which arrived yesterday and a Lightning-30 Pin lead which I'm still waiting on. The two together cost me $65. I reckon when knock offs are available the two spares would be around $25, so I would of risked my Apple warranty to save $40??? No thanks....

Yes, Retail can't refund purchases made from the online store.

In respect of the replacements, these have come off the same production line as an iPhone in a retail box - the only difference is that these aren't placed in a retail package. They also go through the same quality testing as the handset inside your retail box. They are shipped to store in special black plastic cases which are constantly refused (because Apple likes to look after the environment).
