Apple iPhone 5

Yes, the sim is a nano, the new "standard" that only Apple are using (so far, if I'm not mistaken). The new connector is called Lightning and I'm not sure what it's particular benefits are apart from being reversible (no right way up or down) and smaller. My number porting has taken 8 hours so far so I think there has been a problem.

I got mine at 11.00 yesterday WA time by courier. Spent an hour on the phone to Telstra to get my number ported over from Virgin, was told 24 - 48 hours for the port to be completed. It took 23 hours. As of this morning my iPhone 4 was no longer showing any signal life and my iPhone 5 was alive and kicking…

Happy days. Now to get a cover of some sort before I head back to site…

That’ll be one of the things I get before my phone arrives, as Ive always used an iPod sock, but figure now is about the time to progress to a case to protect the wonderful new phone. Those Cygnett cases look nice, but will carefully inspect cases in store over the next month to find something durable and good looking. Not getting my iPhone till November (parent bringing it from HK).

I don't really like the hole in the back to be honest. Plenty of time to shop around.

Which reminds me, Zoo Gue are offering free iPhone 5 cases that'll ship in 3-6 weeks. You only need to pay for shipping. Not a bad gamble on some Christmas presents ;)

Good offer just wondering how much the freight is.

I am wondering when the lifeproof case is coming out as it is water resistant and not as bulky as the Otterbox.

Was $6 for one and $10 for two (max order of 2). Figured my debit card could take the hit.

Are there any attractive deals going for the iPhone 5 ?

For any Apple fan boys that require a phone with maps that work and that can be used offline, may I recommend a Nokia? :p

Nokia: Hey, Apple, our mapping is better than yours | Apple - CNET News

Come back when you can actually buy the Nokia Lumia 920 - I prefer to buy things which are for sale rather than just announced.

The only issue I have had with the Apple maps was that the route selected avoided some toll roads that I would actually use.

Having picked up the 5 over the weekend my desire to kill my Vodafone contract has increased - so light and thin. I wouldn't be looking at a case for this.

Nope, nothing that good from anyone

Telstra and Optus are basically the same price
Vodafone - Waste of time if you want the phone to work

Virgin - Maybe, haven't looked though

I've bounced my 3GS several times, when drunk or just half asleep and not had an issue, yet the first time I handled my mums 4 I managed to crack the whole front screen, so am particularly wary ;)

I am st in the CBD and can rarely connect to the App store on my Vodafone 4S - at home I can't make calls in the kitchen but I can in the dining room.

Its wireless folks, as each cell has its own radiation pattern, users and QOS settings, your experience in any one location is not indicative of what one can expect elsewhere.

That is true - the fact that I can't make calls in my kitchen is not related to the fact that I have trouble connecting to the App store when in my office in the city or why there is coverage at all on the train when passing through [insert suburb] or no 3G coverage when going from [major conurbation] to [insert suburb] or how my 3G signal is flaky (to say the least) when at our offices in [insert suburb of Melbourne] - all of those cell points are completely independent of each other. Other than the fact that they are all owned/managed by Vodafone.

I would be quite surprised if Vodafone had improved to the stage where their service was usable, in WA. Luckily they must be on first name terms with the telecoms ombudsman so they will let you out of a contract with no penalty. Just keep escalating and refusing to budge. My GF ended up staying with them for a few months as they gave 100% discount on the monthly fee for 3 months but it still wasn't worthwile. Free phone and mobile is useless if you miss half the calls.

So after having owned one for 3 1/2 days now, I've got to say 'lawsuit ho' (as in 'land ho').

The black edge on my handset is already 'rubbing off' and showing shiny metal underneath. There has been a long list of people in online forums complaining of it, as well as a lot of 'bad' handsets out of the box (ie, damaged in factory prior to packaging).

I understand phones will get scratches and dings, but 3 1/2 days, being treated with kid gloves, it's poor. I'll wait a week and see how it goes, but I may end up visiting a store to get it replaced (and probably every other week).

Umm, just like my Vodafone connection constantly out performs my Telstra connection at home 4X in speed, while Optus leaves both for dead at work, both related to tower congestion and also signal path issues, and both totally irrelevant to anyone else unless they are at my home or work. Now explaining to my boss why I am online but he cannot ring me at MKY and ROK, different issue, work uses Voda and its coverage at both those airports until recently was scant to nil!

Indeed, but overall Vodafone has the smallest, and slowest network and no 4G
