Just wondering what everyone thinks now the hot meals have come back. What this means for breakfast is that you now get a semi-warm croissant so no leap forward there unless someone knows of a flight where you get the omelette and sausage. However, I had dinner on a recent trip and it was a BIG improvement. Also had a hot lunch flying BNE-DRW even though it was about 11am!
Note the boxes for morning and arvo tea have gone - to reduce waste? Now you get this bag thing made out of Chux like material - works as a serviette!

Several weeks ago I went to Perth and back and the meals were great in both directions. They are a huge improvement over what we have endured for the last few years.

The only down side was the meal that was dropped on my lap :!: A cardboard box would probably be better on this occasion :!:

I once had a beer knocked over by a cabin crew, who was about to pick up the can, but it was still full. It poured over my lap. He was very apologetic, and, after providing cleaning material, proved his sincerity with a bottle of that J class French bubbly. (flight was economy to NZ)

I said: "Can you please pour one over my wife? A second bottle would be nice!"

(I think we all laughed?)

regards,

Gordon, all laughed except your wife who grabbed the bubbly and smaacked you over the back of the head!! Then she was able to laugh (last and hardest).... :D

Did you see that?
It must have been you, sitting behind us Lindsay....

(lucky they don't let her take the frypan on board anymore!)

regards,

By the way we even got a mini-Magnum on the BNE-DRW leg! It was frozen like a rock and I almost broke a tooth! It's the thought that counts. Reminds me of 1st class in the USA where you get ice cream sundaes! Meanwhile at the back...

Frozen

I have also nearly broken a tooth on a deep frozen Magnum on a Qantas flight.

Flew LA to Washington last week on AA in First.
Food was quite edible and yes a very nice (and veyr large) ice cream sundae for dessert.

As I think I mentioned else where on this forum. I just love their "Cheese Pizzas"

Last year I was about to fly AA from Miami to LAX in Cattle class - some 5 hours or so. Thinking we wouldn't get more than the inedible "Bistro Bag" I grabbed a pizza in the terminal and wolfed it down after I got on the plane. Lo and behold they served a meal - must only be on flights over 4 hours? Guess what it was? Pizza!!!!

Hmm, I've done a couple of economy flights this year (unusual for me) and there were two disctinct extremes. A 16:30 Perth > Syd on one of those A330's on which we got served a quite lovely dinner. By comparison I also got on a Bris > Syd the other morning and was quite disappointed to be thrown some revolting cereal thing, and a warm-ish croissant (however its spelt) with jam and no butter. (ok, so I'm uncouth).

What do I think about the Neil Perry menus? With no disrespect toward his culinary talent intended - I'm a simple eater. I'll take a morning flight any time just to get a yummy poached egg, a bit of bacon and a lump of tomato or a hash brown. I'll even endure Qantas toast - which is really not for people with false teeth.

Start forcing menus with unpronounceable names on them at me on an plane ... and I get coughpy.

They really should survey their FF's to find out what we think of the way its all going.

The KISS principle (keep it simple stupid) may serve them well.

Its used to be not at all uncommon to find out that the economy cabin had had a much more straight forward dinner than the bizzare entree, unpronouncable salad and sometimes bizzare main that we got fed in business.

I'll just content myself eating the plane out of bread rolls - as is my normal workaround to a dickie meal. I hate to think they throw 20 of them out at the end of a flight !!

They can keep a few more bottles of Penfolds Bin 407 on board though. Quite a surprise the other evening on a QF Mel > Syd flight (in J).

What I want to know - and if anyone per chance knows this I'd appreciate the answer ... those energy drinks they were serving in Business - the purply coloured ones - think and really quite delicious ... are they available anywhere outside aviation ?? (like Coles?) - and if so - what is the name of them please ?

On my last QF flight, the hot meal I had was very good. Lunch was Moroccan Duck, Apricots and Dates with Harissa (other choices included Slow Roasted Rib Eye of Beef with Port Jus, Seared Kingfish with Horseradish Cream, or Eggplant Parmigiana with Fresh Tomato Sauce and Basil oil). This accompanied with Dom Perignon 1986 followed by Joseph "Moda" Cabernet Sauvignon. Dessert was Nice Cream Passionfruit and Coconut Ice Cream with Tropical Fruit Salad accompanied by De Bortoli Noble One Botrytis Semillon.

Breakfast included Guava and Strawberry Energiser Drink, Croissant with Strawberry Jam, Scrambled Eggs, Sauteed Field Mushrooms and Bacon, and Individual Bodum coffee. But this was not a SYD-MEL flight  .

That's the difference between menu's on the two different sectors - I've always found dinner flights much more palatable than breakfast flights (which I try to avoid like the plague, by flying to my work destination the night before).

Well, you spelt croissant correctly, so you can't be that uncouth, essjay66...

Couldn't have said this any better...he's past his QF use-by date IMHO. Don't be surprised that his restaurant XO in Surry Hills doesn't work either...

Damn, now you have taste...you'd hate to see my Penfolds collection then

You mean the Energiser drinks?? (as mentioned by NM above). I never fail to try and drain the jug, particularly after a long haul Intl red eye (can't see good food go to waste). The best thing for your body (other than the sugar fix).

Problem with ice creams onboard is that there are no freezers - they use dry ice, which keeps them well below the normal freezer temp. So it all depends on how organised your crew are in taking the them out of the dry ice for 15 minutes or so before they servce them.

The Asian carriers (SQ & CX in particular) manage this process to perfection - as you would expect. QF are still learning about service and "cursomer experience".

Seen elsehwere here the KISS request when it comes to infligt meals...

CX have about 10 long haul flights leaving around midnight every day - Oz, Europe and the US. They have a new meal option in J which you can opt for when they take your drink order pre-take off. This is great if you need something to tide you over but don't want the full deal. The "Light Meal" comes on one tray (like it would down the back) but offers a choice of pizza, chinese noodles (fresh, not instant) or gormet style sandwhich plate. It comes out with everyone else's starters and you can eat and be asleep as soon as you wish.

Brilliant.

Lets hope QF listen to their customers rather than promote Neil "Who Cares when you're at 35,000ft" Perry.

Qantas is GREEDY!!!

After this latest highway robbery how and what can we do from now on??
My wife and I are retired and UNFORTUNATELY Qantas lifetime club members.

Please do not call this fatty piece of rubber "croissant".

Any change is a good change

After completing 22 flights to/from Singapore over the last 6 months..... and getting a choice of lemongrass chicken or beef & potato mash on the way up..... and pumpkin ravioli or fish & mushrooms on the way back..... any change is welcome !!!

Well after somehow avoiding dinner flights (or managing to score upgrades) since they've RE-introduced hot meals on to these flights, I had my first hot meal on a MEL-BNE flight on Sunday. My suspicions about this latest "enhancement" were confirmed - not really an enhancement but a a cost cutting measure (as so often is the case with QF these days). Previously the meal used to consist of some cold meat (chicken breast or beef) and some salad. Now, alas, the meat is gone and it was a container full of penne pasta, with a small amount of cheese and tomato based sauce on the top. Not exactly an enhancement, in my books - bring back the cold salad I say! Is this typical (no meat) now for the <2hr sectors, or just bad luck? Can't complain about the longer flights though (MEL-CNS/PER etc).

This is a typical meal to suit the broadest range of diet requirements. That is, low fat, vegetarian, kosher, halal etc.

So, QF don't have to prepare and provide the "Special Meals" for those customers who for health or religeous reasons, require them. Its costs around 5-8 times the normal meal cost to provide "Special Meals" because of:
a) Actually producing meals at a lower volume; and
b) The logistics of getting them on-board...

Cost cost cost...

Sigh - I miss those three teaspoons of chicken and a bucket of chick peas that was served as dinner ex Melbourne and Syd to Brisbane!
