Anyone enjoy the new Qantas menu?

My special meal (LFML) last night had 'chicken balti' printed on the lable.
It was basically a casserol of chicken with rice. Not too bad actually.

Have any of you noticed what they have now done with the "non meal" flights. A pack of nuts, some cheese twists or cookies with a red ochre combination serviette/wipe/rubbish bag. These are showing on ITN as 'brunch'.

My LFML 'brunch' on the 5:30pm MEL-SYD last week was an apple!

The new transcon J service meals are great. The last few times I've caught the evening Scarebus run to Perth from SYD, I've cashed in some credits for an ODU and experienced...

- Prawn coughtail/ Salad, which I always refuse because all seafood is unclean in the eyes of the Lord. Usually this means they bring my main out straight away (fine by me).

- Roast lamb loin with roast vegetables, garden salad. Great stuff for an airline meal, probably the best I've had since a particularly good steak in WHY on Air NZ a few years ago. Other main offerings I've sampled have been rib-eye fillet steak and a warm chicken salad.

- Some form of gourmet rocket & balsamic or whatever ice cream.

- Chocolate, tea, and the customary glass of port.

Damn good.

I haven't experienced the other CityFlyer meals in J or WHY, as I always get to and from MEL and BNE on the CRASH-8 service, which has a great breakfast (youghurt, meuseli bar, juice, fruit, tea) and evening snack service - basically sandwhiches (also unclean in the eyes of the Lord), cheese & biscuits, tea, more biscuits and a small chocolate bar.

Getting to and from ADL I have experienced the orange placemat/ bag with the cheese twists, biscuits and apple. Thumbs up from me.

And yes Lindsay, it's way past time that ponytail-sporting ponce was taken out the back and shot. Apart from failing to comprehend that "gnocchi" is PLURAL (a none-too subtle hint about the size of portions at his establishments), his various crimes against humanity include depleting the entire global supply of rocket lettuce to cover one side dish.

Off with his head, I say. Time to put the Melbourne Club catering staff in charge of QF meals. Good solid food an Empire was built on.

Some QF food has improved with the new menu's - some has not. As is normally the case with any changes QF make, some parts are good most are not and all of them save QF money so Geoff Dixon and his team of executive dropouts can get their bonuses. The 2 hr flights are the worse. 1 hr you don't expect much - longer you get more. Perth -> east coast are generally OK - in the end it all comes down to the crews - most of which are very average to say the least.

If you want good food, fly Singapore or Cathay - especially up the front of the plane. Both of them put QF to shame

And by the way, if Neil Perry every flew on a long haul flight he may then understand why 1 curry, 1 spicy dish, 1 dish with mushrooms and all dishes with black pepper are not great snacks at 12.00 midnight.

That's a curious statement, if ever I heard / read one!

" All seafood is unclean in the eyes of The Lord ".

So, where did the 'loaves and fishes' story come from then?

(I know religion should not be discussed here.... but....)

A 'little birdie' just told me... that it is 'shellfish' that is in question.... not all seafood. Fish is OK.

And how many 1 to 3 hour domestic flights do either of these carriers operate?

Dave

The new menu's are a definite improvement, especially on QF599 Adelaide-Perth, which used to be a bean and noodle salad thing.

However, is it just the flights I catch, or is honey coriander chicken always one of the options?

The best in flight meal QF I have had this year was on 44 to SYD from AKL. I was in J and received a large rib eye steak with baked vegetables ("sorry sir, no special meals today"); the servings were too big to properly fit on the tray.

Turns out an Emirates 777 out of AKL was cancelled and QF got the unused EK meals order.

There was no relationship between the printed menu cards and the food in either WHY or J. PAX and FA's were quite astonished at the difference between these and what would normally have been offered.

Many surprised and well fed SLC's (& FA's) rolled out of the caft in SYD :D !

And go the third world (you know, the land of freedom and capitism) and see what type of meal you get in WHY for a 3.5 hour flight, say LAX-DFW, or ORD-LAX. Even if the flight is right over a breakfast, lunch or dinner time you will get a bag of pretzles to enjoy for the flight - unless you are an elite FF in which case you have probably received a free upgrade to so-called First Class, where the only thing first about it is being first to stuff your three suit cases into the overhead lockers.

I've found that on some legs you get the choice of hot meals (chicken or fish) but on others it's just chicken. Fo example flew DRW-ADL and there was a choice of Fish Something or Chicken Balti. Then ADL-SYD it was, you guessed it, Chicken Balti or nothing! And you know I ended up with the chicken twice! Luckily the hosty helped me turn it into a satay with the addition of peanuts to liven it up! I've had similar on SYD-BNE followed by BNE-TSV. That was in the days of the boxes so I can tell you I wasn't happy to get the same soggy roll twice! I can certainly live with two hot meals the same.

I got a reasonable meal on a 3rd world airline (AA) MIAMI-LAX - about 5 hours. I thought I wouldn't get fed so loaded up with a pizza before I got on board! Then I got another meal! All other flights over there I've only got "Bistro/Barf Bags" when flying Cattle. First though is another wolrd with those delicious ice cream sundaes!

I assume you were on QF82 DRW-ADL as that is an international flight originating in Singapore (as opposed to QF753 or QF757 which are domestic flights). However, the hot meals are only supposed to be for dinner time flights, and there are no DRW-ADL flights in the current schedule that are dinner time flights, so I wonder why they were serving a choice of fish or chicken??

MIA-LAX is consider a Trans-Continental flight and does have full catering in all classes. But if you took something like MIA-DFW-LAX in coach you have received two packets of pretzles - one on each sector.

Yes, AA's First Class catering is pretty good, but no variety. As good as the cheese omlet is, the black bean salsa it comes with can do with some variation. I don't know how they get such consistency between ports! It has not changed in the last 12 months.

No it was QF 757 out of Darwin at midday and we had the choice - it's the 3rd time I've done this in 2 months and that's been the case each time. Also get a choice of chicken or pasta normally on BNE-DRW on the way up. BTW lunch on that flight is served at about 10 am QLD time!

What this all means is an endlessly expanding menu!! :D
