The logistics of safely feeding 400 people on a plane are enormous and not it's not just one plane a day. Yes there are meals that don't meet expectations, but you're not dining in a restaurant. The food has to be prepared in advance, especially for Y class. It's frozen in most cases to keep it safe. In J and F class food is prepared and chilled before being loaded. When you think of how many people eat airline food and how little food poisoning occurs it is amazing. The airline industry goes to a lot of trouble to make sure that passengers aren't made ill from the food served on board. In the 1970s there were several foodborne outbreaks - we're much luckier nowadays.
My gripe is that Qantas doesn't provide trays anymore in Y class. You have to put your bakery item on the tray table which may or may not be clean. That's not very hygienic, especially if people on board are coughing from viral infections.
