My thinking as well. Significant other signed up (and approved) but most certainly wont renew given the pretty terrible direct earning Vs the much cheaper platinum edge (with choice of transfer partner).

Lounge passes and slightly further/better flight benefit aren't worth an additional $154 given the earn in my books (if you don't intend on using the business class discount feature)... Platinum edge is really a fantastic card for the money though (FAR superior point earning, local champion bonus PLUS regular 15% bonus to VFF).

Agree with you. This is not a keeper for me, but the sign on bonus (if I actually get it, given I already have an Amex card) is worth the $349. The "free" flight reduces the cost if you can use it.

Any idea whether having a bank issued Amex makes you ineligible for this offer? I currently have the CBA Platinum Awards Amex + Visa.

you should be fine.

It is only if you have an direct AMEX issued card.

All partnered amex cards with a bank WBC,ANZ,CBA,NAB is eligible.

I got this card, and just looked up some SYD-DPS-SYD flights on VA. Message said that I 'cannot use AMEX card to pay for flights'. What the?

I signed up Mrs citrusb through an earlier referral on the 80k, approved and card received on Wednesday.
Filled in online referral details so I can take up the offer and we both win. Question? how does her link come through, Amex say they email in few days? How did other FF's receive theirs and how long did it take....thanks

Theres been several reports that existing (primary) cardholders received the bonus so i expect supp card holders would too. I would just select 'dont currently have amex' when applying.

Feeling very disappointed, received my plat card, called up prior to activation just to check I was eligible for bonus and was advised no because I had a David Jones Store card...bugger

OK, a bit confused with the various threads, but here's an update for those wondering if they can get bonus points when already holding a direct AMEX ... the answer is 'yes', in my case.

AMEX is showing that I spent just over $500 on the 80K points offer and those are all showing in my AMEX account. Just looking forward to confirming this in the sweep to VA soon.

You might get a surprise. I was told the same thing early this year when applying for Edge but ended up getting a bonus. I think the agent just told you what was written in terms and conditions. I'm not saying you will definitely get it but the chance is high as long as it is a new application. I even declared in the application that I already had an amex card.
