This creates a referral link for him to refer you and anyone else. You and anyone else would then apply via this link to be counted at referred by your father.

Re: AMEX Velocity Platinum Card - 110,000 Points / $349pa / $1000 Spend

Once you have the card (for a new application), can you refer others straight away? Or do you have you actually have to start using the card, pay the annual fee, or get your initial 110k first?

As soon as you have activated the card you can refer. When looking at your online account head up to Rewards and you will see Offer and Refer friends and earn rewards. This is where you can create your referral link.

Re: AMEX Velocity Platinum Card - 110,000 Points / $349pa / $1000 Spend

A question in relation to the free flight. How soon after you have Activated your card can you book the free flight. Asking for a friend who is looking at taking up the offer and believes its a 12 month wait. I'm sure that can't be correct.

I have had the card 4 weeks, spent the $1000, got the points, used 2 x lounge passes at the AMEX Lounge SYD T1, used the 2 x VA domestic lounge passes and booked the free flight.

You do not have to wait 12 months. You can book the free flight immediately. Just call the number on the back of the card and its done.

Is there any way of extracting value from the free flights as a shell booking or similar? I am told the flight redemption is in a category than cannot be upgraded into an earning fare category which you can then apply points to a biz upgrade, or upgraded with co-payment to biz cabin. So does anyone know if its possible to modify or do something to the booking that leaves in a state with residual value like a voucher which I can then use toward an upgradeable fare or outright biz fare?

This question has been around for a while and in the past, and afaik, the answer has been 'no'.

Correct, the free flight appears against your card when you first use the card (see your online statement).

My free flight has the option of upgrading (both via the UpgradeMe bid system and by using velocity points - 30,000 for one-way PER-SYD).

Paid for a Virgin flight today using this card, and was surprised that it didn't waive the $7.70 credit card fee.

Why would it? My Qantas associated cards dont waive the $7 Qantas fee

I used to do this, still have last years Amex Plat edge flight sitting in a credit shell with amex ... and thats the problem - we used to get the credit shell from VA and could use it just like money but now, apparently, its held by Amex and it might be more difficult to do this. I'll be finding out quite soon.

I just thought it would; thought the card would have been affiliated close enough to waive the fee.

Another question; how long does the referral points usually arrive? Is it from the moment the person activates their card? or after they have met the spending requirements? Just gotta keep a look out for those points, that's all :) :)

Had 6 refferal bonuses paid so far, all seem to be credited Sub 24 hours of card approval!

Re: AMEX Velocity Platinum Card - 110,000 Points / $349pa / $1000 Spend

I already had the Amex Velocity card. Had wife sign up who got the 110k, brother in law asked what I wanted for my Birthday "110k points I answered" since he's not into the points game he applied and family transferred his points. + 6 referals has me at 340k points from this promotion. Both wife and Brother will get the annual card fee back from free flights BNE / CBR and save a few dollar. Loving this! ANZ frequent flyer (Qantas) Black is now doing 75k bonus Qantas points + First Annual fee free!!!! Looks like we might be moving to US style sign ups!

Thanks for the responses about when I can start referring my friends... wonder if it actually worked though.

Well it's been more than 24 hours for me, and still nothing. They were approved over the weekend though, so hope it's just a delay. :-|

Re: AMEX Velocity Platinum Card - 110,000 Points / $349pa / $1000 Spend

Maybe someone can answer a question I have............I checked my wife's AMEX Velocity "My Transactions" list last week and noted that the 2 lounge passes and the "Virgin Australia Domestic Flight" were on the list. Today I was checking for her referral bonus and noted that the domestic flight is no longer listed (but the 2 lounge passes still are).
I presume the flight should still be listed because it has to be booked through AMEX and we haven't used it yet.

Or am I missing something simple? Thanks

Re: AMEX Velocity Platinum Card - 110,000 Points / $349pa / $1000 Spend

So I checked my account this morning and I see this ...

I have referred 5 people and I know they all have been approved. I haven't met my $1,000 spend yet so I assume those 100K was from the referrals?

Nope, these are your sign up points, the referral links your friends used will show as individual allocations (e.g. 5x20,000).

The bonus points are credited when you spend $500, the T&Cs say $1,000 but looks like $500 is the trigger (I had a friend at work test the $500 rule and it worked for him as well).

Congrats on the 220,000 points coming your way!
