What are people gonna do with their 20,000 points?

Transfer to a a FF?

I will probably transfer to Velocity when they have their next 25% bonus points promotion

Same here, or maybe the travel voucher. I can rarely find point value > 1 cent per point with Velocity so the travel voucher seems reasonable value.

I got this card for the travel insurance and free flights. The points were an added bonus worth $200 to me. The free flights turned out to be worth $324 to me.

I just accumulate them and transfer to SQ Kris Flyer when needed. I seem to find decent value redeeming flights with them, my most recent being 2 business class tickets ATH-SIN-BKK at a cost of 93.5K points (with a current retail price of ~$3,900). Calculating less tax, less ff points earn ... I would value each point in this situation at around the 3 cent mark net.

Just spend $500 or more on your Card in the first two months following approval, and the points are yours." im thinking of applying for this offer intstead as i think its a better deal since i plan on using it for the free flight to NZ which would cover the annual fee of $295. now im not to sure if i should join Membership Rewards or Qantas Frequent Flyer. can you transfer your points from MR to QFF program later on? which program offers a better point return per dollar to cash in the 40k points?

Amex Platinum Edge Card, with 20000 joining bonus (valid to March 2011)

I have just spoken with an Amex person and was told the 20,000 bonus points expires for approvals before 15 January 2011.

Huh? I've read that 5 times but still don't get it, sorry. Please explain.

Our bonus has not posted and we are nearing the point of chasing it up by phone. Unfortunately our past experience with Amex bonuses has not been good. Usually phone, get told numerous different reasons why we won't get the points, have to fax screen shots etc, follow up later when nothing is done, fax again, then finally get the points.

If you want the 20,000 points you need to have your application approved before 15 January 2011, not March 2011 as stated in the thread header. I hope that only needs one read.:)

Edit: I hope someone can prove me wrong with a link because i would like to apply and get the 20k points!

prozac, this link still works American Express® and the T&Cs say

Offer only available to new Platinum Edge Basic Credit Card members who apply here, are approved by 01 March 2011 and spend $500 in the first 2 months of Card membership. Please allow 8 to 10 weeks after the $500 spend benchmark has been met for the 20,000 Membership Bonus Points to be awarded to the Card member's account.
Take a screen shot to fax later!:)

It took some searching but here it i. Thanks snufl the Amex rep was obviously wrong (surprise!) as it clearly states 1 March.
Thanks again.:)

Can anyone point me to the PDS for this card and for its travel insurance? I'm having no luck locating it on their website.

What are AMEX thinking?

I've called more that once to be told by AMEX that the points will only arrive 8-10 weeks after the promotion term ends.... currently 1 March, NOT after the $500 spend.

If anyone gets some points then please let us know.

hmmm, just saw this today, but had seent his offer a while ago and passed over it...

Does anyone know how hard or easy it is to book reward flights on TAM airlines of Brazil? I go on KrisFlyer website and put in one way flights between Iguazu Falls and Rio de J and then between Rio de J and Lima and they come to 12,500 each, so 25,000 total...

this card seems to offer 20,000 MR points which convert 1-1 Krisflyer Miles... so it would seem all I would need is another 5,000 MR points which with 3x $ spent at supermarkets and 2x $ at service stations plus booking my upcoming holiday shouldn't be too hard...

does that sound about right? then for the $149 i also get the travel insurance and the extra domestic flight...

two issues is that i will be flying these legs in South America in Brazil in June and if they can take up to 2.5 months after the end of the redemption period in March for the MR points to come through that is cutting it pretty fine to redeem tickets, and as i said i don't know how hard it is to book (or how many seats are available) on TAM airlines...

Does anyone have any suggestions???

I am also going to book a OW award around the world airfaire plus seperate airpasses for flights around South America and other flights for around Europe... for the travel insurance to cover all this i would have to booke very flight witht his card plus the taxes/charges of the OW RTW fare would i???

Anyone have a read of this?

Yeah, I've just read it now, can't say I'm really surprised. A bit further back the thread I was hunting for the PDS for the travel insurance and I was pretty unimpressed by what I saw. The card is pretty good otherwise, but for a Platinum card I would have expected better, especially from American Express that likes to portray themselves as a 'premium' company.

This is the only thing holding me back from getting this card.

Why don't you have a look at some of the travel insurance policies being offered by the 'zero cost' cards? Such as the NAB Gold Transaction Account with Visa Debit or the BankWest Zero Gold/Platinum Mastercard. Personally I've found the NAB Gold Visa Debit to be good, especially since it only requires "50% of your trip's pre-paid expenses" to be charged to the card to activate the policy. However, I've never actually had to claim against it, and I guess you only really find out how good these policies are when you have to claim.

I've got the AMEX Platinum Edge card, but I just wouldn't rely on the travel insurance it comes with. It's a shame really, because I'd like to be able to put my travel expenses onto it and get the points, but instead I forgo the points to get a more robust insurance policy from my other card. The real thing that worries me about the AMEX policy is the stringent limits on medical cover (approval before more than $1,500).
