There's a new bonus offer for Amex Platinum Charge of up to 200,000 bonus Membership Rewards points:

That’s 150,000 Bonus Membership Rewards Points when you apply online by 27 January 2021, are approved and spend $3,000 on your new Card within the first 3 months. Plus, an additional 50,000 Bonus Membership Rewards Points in Year 2 upon fee renewal. New Card Members only.

This card delivers many lifestyle and travel benefits, including:
  • a $450 Travel Credit
  • elite status with major hotel loyalty programs including Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, Accor Hotels and others
  • complimentary Accor Plus membership valued at $395 p.a.
  • access to the American Express Fine Hotels and Resorts program, which provides complimentary benefits at over 1,000 five-star properties worldwide valued at an average of $700 for a two-night stay
  • earn 2.25 Membership Rewards points per $1 spent on everyday purchases
  • transfer points to 10 airline partners, including both Qantas and Virgin Australia
  • access to over 1,200 airport lounges in more than 130 countries, including Virgin Australia lounges, American Express lounges, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and more (when they reopen)
  • top-notch travel insurance cover
  • Australian Financial Review Premium Digital subscription valued at $628 per year
  • smartphone screen insurance, with up to $500 available twice a year for screen repairs (with a 10% excess)
  • up to 4 free Additional Cards for family members - they can enjoy some the card benefits in their own right, like elite hotel status, travel insurance, and one Priority Pass membership.
While the $1,450 annual fee is high, the total value of the card benefits is much bigger if you use them.

To be eligible for the bonus points, you must not have held a card issued directly by Amex Australia in the last 18 months.

If your application is successful I'll receive 45,000 bonus points. Here's my referral link:

Thank you!

That's still not that amazing. They previously were offering 120k at times prior to the devaluation. That would equate to 240k now. I'm actually surprised how poor the sign-on bonus is usually for this card these days.

Yes $1450 seems a bit steep but if you add all the benefits it's easy to get enough value out of it to justify the yearly fee and definitely worth it in the first year thanks to those 200k bonus points :)

Adding my referral link below, if you want to share the love I'd appreciate those 45k points generously provided by Amex as referral bonus!

"50,000 in year 2 upon renewal".......... can hardly count towards the headline 200K number.

A bit shady no?

It's like saying, get 1,000,000 points on signup - 150k now and 50k per year for the next 17 years upon each renewal and paying the full annual fee.

As someone who recently signed up to this card using another member's link, I'm adding my referral link along with my thoughts on how to best extract value from this card and justify the $1450 annual fee. We'll start with the most tangible benefits and work through to some of the lesser known benefits.

150,000 MR Ascent Premium points is one of the higher bonuses offered for this card in the last couple of years. Crediting to Asia Miles or KrisFlyer can deliver some of the best value redemptions, while the flexibility of crediting to QFF can make sense in some circumstances like domestic awards. If you are already points-rich and more attracted to the other perks of this card, you can also pay off statement charges at a rate of 1,000 points = $5. You could effectively sell your 150,000 sign-up bonus back to Amex for a $750 statement credit.

The uncapped earn rate of 2.25 MR points per dollar and no pre-set spending limit can particularly useful if you are able to push a lot of spend through the card. The card earns an effective 1.125 KrisFlyer or Asia Miles per dollar.

An annual $450 travel voucher comes with the card for use with Amex Travel, and can be used on flights, hotels, and hire cars among other products.

The card includes an Accor Plus membership (valued at $399) which brings Accor Live Limitless Silver status, a complimentary night of accommodation and up to 50% off your food bill when dining at cafes and restaurants at Accor properties in APAC.

A strong and varied range of insurance coverage is included with the Platinum Charge. While the card was well known for its comprehensive travel insurances, there are several types of coverage which are still very useable during the pandemic. These include Refund Protection, Purchase Protection, Buyer's Advantage and Smartphone Screen cover. Home Assistance and Roadside Assistance coverage are also included for emergencies when at home or in the car. Full list of insurances available here.

In additional to the ALL Silver status mentioned earlier, a wide variety of other hotel and hire car status tier are instantly available to Platinum Charge cardholders. This includes Gold status with Hilton, Marriott and Radisson. Shangri-La's Golden Circle Jade status is also currently available with the card for enrolments before the end of March.

Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts is exclusive to Platinum and Centurion card holders, and offers a slew of useful benefits at select luxury hotels. At the Shangri-La Sydney for example, the below $295 stay on Australia Day comes with $130 (AUD) property credit, breakfast, guaranteed 4pm check-out, plus room upgrades and early check-in where available. FHR bookings are eligible for status benefits during your stay, and will earn points and status nights towards the hotel's own loyalty program.

Lastly, the Platinum Charge allows for up to four supplementary cardholders at no additional cost. All supplementary cardholders can access Centurion and American Express Lounges, Plaza Premium Lounges, Delta SkyClubs, and a nominated supplementary cardholder can access Priority Pass Lounges.

If you've found this post helpful or learned about a feature of the card, please consider using my referral link when signing up. Thank you.
