Hi.
I’m adding my referral link to the list for anyone kind enough to use it.
There’s not a whole lot new to be added to the discussed in this thread, but I have endeavoured to contribute positively by providing some helpful links and also examples of statement credits etc. The sort of information which might aid in the decision making process. Of course I stand to benefit from any signup using my link (same as all other links here).
Thanks. :)

PointHacks has an excellent overview of this card & also the uses of Membership Reward points. Great blog.

Hope I’ve helped anyone looking to apply. Once again my referral link is at the top of this page.

Hi all, I am a recent applicant (now holder of the Amex Plat Charge) and am adding my referral link also for anyone who is looking to apply/kind enough to use it. (link here)
I've spent a fair bit of time researching & investigating the various benefits to get comfortable with out laying $1200 pa for the card - happy to share my thoughts with anyone who asks.

The 120k points offer is phenomenal and the best I have seen for an Amex offer. (applications open until 31/10/16)

Membership Rewards points convert 1:1 to Singapore Airlines, Qantas, Virgin Australia, Emirates, Ethiad, Virgin Atlantic, Air New Zealand, Thai, Malaysia Airlines and Cathay Pacific / Asia Miles

Happy to answer and questions and my referral link is here. Thanks

Hi guys, learning to share the love here. First referral post, thanks for using my link

Referrals for AMEX platinum charge card is valid till 31st October 2015

This is an interesting and in some ways daunting offer. The $1200 annual fee, seems massive (to me at least), but then again 120,000 MR points is super super massive! I deliberated in this one for a good couple of weeks (normally I see - I apply!), but after crunching the numbers for the 5th time I decided to jump in and test the waters (thanks to AMEX's pro-rata refunds this is an option).

If you're also keen to apply here is the UPDATED REFERRAL LINK: OFFER NOW Expires 2 February 2016. You receive 120,000 Membership Rewards points if you spend $1000 in the first two months - updated referral link HERE!

As very recent applicant - only received the card this week - here are my brief thoughts on why I think the massive 120k points on offer justifies the $1200 annual fee:

  • 120,000 Membership Rewards points - pretty simple really - based on my numbers I value this at easily $3000+ (annual fee covered right there!)
  • Points can be transferred to massive variety of partners - Qantas FF, Virgin Velocity and some more valuable ones via SPG (AAdvantage, BA Executive Club & US Airways Dividend Miles)
  • $200 Annual Travel Credit with American Express Travel - value $200 (clearly)
  • Free domestic / international flight (NZ) if you apply for a FREE Platinum Reserve companion card - ring AMEX after approval to arrange an application for this (value to me $400+) - Destinations List Here (Platinum Reserve)
  • Unlimited Virgin Australia / Priority Pass Lounge Access - again subjective value $200 (I should be able to make use of this half a dozen or more times over the year).
Very happy to take any questions on how I decided this offer was value, if you'd like to know more, either post back here or PM me if you want more info.

Quick Card Summary (as per the other posts):

  • 120,000 Membership Rewards bonus points after spending $1000 in first two months after card activation
  • A $200 Platinum Travel Credit each year, can be redeemed online for airfares, car hire and hotel bookings
  • Complimentary access to more than 800 airport lounges in 100 countries, including Virgin Australia Lounges, Priority Pass, Delta Skymiles and American Express Lounges
  • Dedicated Platinum Concierge Service to take care of travel plans, tickets or dinner reservations
  • Earn up to 3 Membership Reward points per dollar
  • Transfer your points to a choice of 10 airline rewards programs:
    • Qantas Frequent Flyer, Virgin Australia Velocity Frequent Flyer, Emirates Skywards, Etihad Guest, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, Air New Zealand Airpoints, THAI Royal Orchid Plus, Malaysia Airlines Enrich and Cathay Pacific Asia Miles
  • And the best bit, transfers to AAdvantage, BA Executive Club & US Airways Dividend Miles, amongst others are possible through SPG (Starwood Preferred Guest)
  • Transfer your points to leading hotel programs:
    • Hilton HHonors, Priority Club Rewards, Starwood Preferred Guest
  • Complimentary enrolment into elite tier of hotel partner programs including Club Carlson, Starwood Preferred, Club Accorhotels and Accor Plus
  • Complimentary worldwide Travel Insurance and Purchase Protection
  • Enjoy great savings on First and Business Class fare with some of the worlds leading airlines through the Platinum Airline Privileges program
All up I rate this as a very good offer, certainly worth applying for - I put my money where my mouth is on this one. As I said up front, I value this offer at $3000+. As another basic example, the 120k points redeemed for Virgin economy SYD-MEL flights is worth $2200 (and this option isn't even trying!!!).

Would a rate the Platinum Charge as a keeper or a earn and churn - probably the latter, although I'll give it some time before cancelling. If you decide you don't like it AMEX will refund the annual fee pro-rata upon cancellation.

Referral link is HERE, for anyone kind enough to use my link, my heart felt thanks, the points will be put to good use by my wife and I on a belated baby moon!

PS - I used a random post, #17 (generated by an internet random number generator), for my referral last week. I hope you put the points to good use mlob ;)

Thanks Blueythecat.! Was a very pleasant surprise. Was wondering if Id get a referral on this card. You are my first and one and only.

Regarding the on going value on the card....I find it hard to put a figure on it. I basically add up the $200 travel credit, the free travel insurance, the one free night hotel stays we get ( via Accor Advantage Plus ) and another free hotel stay or a return flight to NZ! (via the Platinum Reserve card, which I would recommend) and the virgin lounge entry for my partner (via the supplementary card...has never failed, I have status with Virgin so no value there for me) .....then Ive covered the cost of the card. Then on top of that we have enjoyed all the other numerous benefits like upgraded hotel stays, comped drinks and lounge access, included internet. Free bottles of wines at restaurants. Last minute booking reservations and impossible to get into restaurants....and the list goes on.

But in regards to picking up an easy 120,000 points. This offer is a NO BRAINER!

Im off this weekend with my family of 4 to enjoy a night at the Sofitel Broadbeach courtesy of this card via the included Accor Advantage Plus membership.

for those of you who took up this offer and already had Accor Plus, did this get added onto your existing membership extending the expiry date, or was it a new membership? And for those who had a reserve already, were you able to make this the free companion card?

Not sure about the Accor Plus but I had Accor Plat before I got this and the membership simply got applied to my accor number. What actually happened was that I was initially assigned with a new number, but they merged it and kept my existing number as the 'primary' number, so all my points and transactions carried over without any issues.

As for the reserve, I didn't have the reserve before getting the charge card but I applied for the reserve almost immediately after I got the charge card, so my reserve failed to make it onto the system as being a complementary card. I ended up being charged for the annual fee but I called up and they immediately waived it. Then for the second year, I got charged again so I called up and they waived the annual fee again but also that time around, they did something to the system to make the reserve card a proper companion card to my charge card so that I wasn't charged anymore in the future.

According to my friend you have to wait until your existing one expires (or is close to expiry) and then apply for through the Plat Charge. Or put another way, no it doesn't extend the existing expiry.

Hope this helps.

I am going to apply and would like to spread the love (20,000 pts) to soemone who hasn't received a bonus yet.

i have 2 questions ;
Do i need to wait a full 2 months to get the points if i spend $1,000 on the card in say the first week ?
Does buying overseas currency or some other cash benefit through Amex qualify as the $1,000 spend.

I spend about $10k p.m. on Mastercard, but used to have an Amex and struggled to use it.

thanks

Digger.

The T&C's state: "Membership Rewards Bonus Points will be awarded to the eligible Card Member’s account 8-10 weeks after the spend criteria has been met."

Cash benefits will not usually qualify as as eligible spend.

thanks, and has it dropped to 100,000 pts ?
i am travelling to UK in May next year, and am worried that by the time I apply for the card and then spend $1,000 and then wait 8-10 weeks, it will be difficult to use the points to get a J flight.
Any opinion ?

Its still 120,000 bonus points.

The application process and time to get the card is very quick. If you are lucky they sometimes allocate the points earlier.
I think theres enough time to book a flight if the point come through around early Feb next year.

Nope the promo is still 120k with a referral. It is just that if you apply without the referral, you will only get the 100k.

As for the points, the words do say 8-10 weeks so they can hold your points ransom to that. However in saying that, my friend recently applied and he received his points within 2 weeks of his first spend. So YMMV but I'm fairly positive that you'll get it quite quickly.

From my experience the points came through almost immediately after I hit the $1000 spend.
