AMEX not accepted or surcharge

Interesting about CC charges, in the following anecdote, its the Woolworths Station that does not CC surcharge.
In a street close to where I live there are two fuel stations across from each other.

Their advertised fuel prices match very closely. One charges a 2.2% levy for ALL CC purchases - that effectively adds 3¢ perl to the fuel cost.

No prizes for guessing which one gets my business.

It is my experience that most/all caltex branded caltex servos charge for ALL credit card transactions- not just Amex.

I'm yet to use a servo in Adelaide that has a surcharge. In fact the Casino servo was the first I've found with a surcharge.

Woolworth's branded Caltex do NOT surcharge
Caltex ONLY branded servos do surcharge for ALL cards, they always seem to be the first to raise prices and last to lower them too. The Caltex only branded ones in MEL were the first to go over the 149.9 barrier to 152.9..

The Caltex-branded servo/truck stop on South Road at Wingfield (Adelaide) wanted a surcharge for Amex & Diners but not Visa & MC. A Caltex servo also on South Road but at Edwardstown has no surcharges. I haven't identified a pattern but could relate to franchise/corporate ownership.

Like medhead I am yet to use a servo in Adelaide that surcharges. Even if I could use my backup MC I'll simply drive away and go elsewhere on principle (similarly for stations that want payment up front). If they simply don't take Amex I'll happily use the MC - but will probably avoid them in the future.

[I suppose there could be circumstances where I would back down but I haven't so far]

I bought petrol from 2 discount petrol stations in Sydney on the weekend which have accepted Amex without surcharge for as long as I can remember.

One had a 2.2% surcharge while the other one had a 3% surcharge. I happily paid it but they will not get my business again.

Woolworths Caltex are not surcharging now in my area so I go there now rather than treating them as if they have the plague.

Which stations are these, John?

Called Centurion to book me a booth at the Long Room Melbourne (a centurion partner). Paid for a drink at the bar with an Amex card and copped a 3%+ surcharge, pretty peeved at the one! Surely amex shouldn't sign up partners which are going to surcharge.

Perhaps try reporting them to Amex through their online form? I did this when Bob Jane T-Marts introduced a 3% Amex surcharge, yet was listed as a bonus partner. A few weeks later, I got an email back saying that they had removed the surcharge :D

Bump..

Anyone have home insurance with an Amex friendly Insurer?

With RACV at the moment and time to move on!

Have a look at the insurance page on my AMEX merchant wiki for a short list of known insurers that accept AMEX.

Personally, I'm with Suncorp, and I'm happy as they don't surcharge for AMEX, and they also included full flood cover by default on my policy - something that many other Queenslanders unfortunately didn't look into before January. :)

Thanks for all this info on Amex. I've been sent an offer by the Commonwealth Bank to upgrade to Diamond Mastercard which comes with an Amex if wanted. Came across this website and thread trying to find how widely accepted Amex is now in Australia and any extra fees involved before I make a decision. This thread is Very Helpful :D

Just took an interesting survey. Seems like an organisation is looking to actively campaign against Amex. The survey asked what I thought about shops putting up signs saying:

(a) Visa and Mastercard (logos) are preferred over Amex (text)
(b) V/MC cards have zero surcharge
(c) shopping for points? V/MC have a better rate than A with surcharge

No idea who's be behind this, unless V/MC are in cahoots and ganging up together. The survey also asked a bunch of questions about what I'd do if the shop didn't take Amex, whether I'd use another card, pay by cash, etc.

At this rate, unless Amex starts pushing back, they'll be extinct within the next few years. My Visa/Amex usage used to be around 60/40, but now - even though I mostly go out of my way to choose a provider that takes Amex - it's more like 80/20.

My Amex usage is roughly at 85-95%, only 5% for Visa/MC and another 5% for cash.

I would say I'm 95% Amex 4% Visa and 1% Cash.

Off the top of my head the Visa come's from restraunts that dont take Amex or my hairdresser. the 1% Cash if for the lunch shop who i have told should accept amex :D
