Cancelling both of miss blingy's edge & explorer accounts....to start the 18 month Amex-free waiting period.

She called seperately for both cards first, 15k offered for each card. Points moved out. Will now cancel accounts.

Easy 30k points for a few minutes on the phone.
She is never a happy camper about doing so but I always remind her about how much she enjoys J

They do have the ability to claw back points, just because you move the points out doesn't mean the end of the story. I'm sure they have a record of the retention phone call and cancelling the card so soon after is asking for trouble. Anyway let us know how you go.

I haven't read all 51 pages of this thread but I wanted to cancel my Qantas Amex Discovery Card ($0) AF. Had an Amex Corporate Card and CBA Amex Platinum. Just wanted to stream line my cards, nothing to do with Amex service or product, just wasnt using it. Went to cancel QF Amex and was straight up offered 15k QFF points to keep it, which I gladly accepted.

Have sinced ditched corporate card and since CBA has slashed the points earn on bank issued Amex, I actually now use my QFF Amex heaps.

Rang up to cancel DJ Amex as fee just hit account. Last three years have offered me 30k points to stay. This time offered to move me into fee free store card which I declined. Card cancelled immediately with no other offers

A bit surprised, was hoping for the points but was more than willing to cancel as well. Put less than 10k through last year so not worth the fee and currently rationalising (down from 9 to 5 now with a couple more to go) before looking at some more bonus point offers later in the year.

Also have had some great referral offers, 30K QFF points to refer a friend, so referred my missus for one, she also got 12.5K QFF points bonus sign up. Also get 2 points per $ for Qantas bookings.

A few months ago I received 23K to retain my edge. However, I called up about a month after I paid the annual fee.

Does everyone call for the retention bonus just before the annual fee is due, or is it better to pay the annual fee initially then call?

I had the same experience recently with a zero fee Amex Gold Card, which I'd had from ACS affinity card times.

BTW, how long did it take for the 15k points to hit your QFF account?

Anyone knowa what happens to the reserve card if you cancel the plat charge?
According to the letter I received with the Reserve card, you'll be charged a $395 annual fee if you cancel the Platinum charge card.

Thanks, I assume it will be charged on the anniversary of the reserve card and not immediately after cancelling the plat charge?

Not sure, I've never tried cancelling. Probably best to ask them if that's what you're planning to do. However, in my experience, their call centre staff aren't all that reliable when it comes to policy questions, so I suggest getting an answer in writing.

Rang today with just over a month before my Velocity Platinum renews, was offered and accepted 36,000 velocity points not to cancel.

C.

How many months of inactivity did you have on the card?

23K on wife's Edge. Not a lot of $$ goes on this card.

Given the 23K, there is not much point cancelling to wait 18 months for a new bonus.

I rang up to cancel Velocity Platinum card - offered 15k. I haven't spent a huge amount on it - only about $25k across a year with no interest paid. Are people getting more with a similar spend?

Also, has anyone cancelled the card in less than 12 months after being rewarded a retention bonus?

Mrs excel did a month ago after getting a retention bonus in Feb. QF Amex Premium about 15k if i remember correctly, has a $250 annual fee

I've held my Amex Explorer for just short of a year and will call this month to 'cancel my card'.

How prepared should I be?

Should I have transferred my balance of 30k points out to make it seem like I'm serious? (I'd rather not)

Should I pay my balance early before it's due?

First time trying this so I appreciate the advice.

You should be prepared to give a reason. like for example
Hi, I want to cancel my card
Why
Because I have too many and i have assessed all the cards I have and decided that I will cancel this one because [insert here]

You may get an offer, you may not. Be careful with the reason you give, you are probably trying to lead them.

I think saying, "i only signed up for the offer" will get you what you deserve,
but "card with other bank has same earn rate and less annual fee" will probably go a long way.

I'm hoping for 50k points since that is the retention benefit on the business Explorer. Mines not due for another 6 months or so so won't know for a little while. Interested to hear how others with earlier expiry dates get on.
