Amenity kit outrage

Anyone have any ideas where you can grab the 25g tubes of toothpaste these packs always seem to have?? I like that size for quick trips, but no idea where to get them.

As Foreigner suggests from your dentist, though I buy those travel size ones - that are around 80gms.

tixhr1096137279.jpg The toothpaste in the CX J kit is great, and lasts for ages when you on the road. The AY kit is distinctive, and I quite. like the CX one. But as you can see in the PIC, I have a QF one from decades past that still gets a run on occasions.

Pretty satisfied with the EK J kits. Still use the bag as my travel toiletries bag and the contents had everything I want.

All I usually want in a kit is toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, comb, lip balm and moisturiser.

I'm never going to shave on a plane, so no idea why airlines would put that in there and I don't really need a shoe horn either. The fragrances are usually pretty rubbish.

I have pretty limited experience of kits, but agree that the EK F and J kits are very good and the bag excellent. QF F bag is good but contents of both the F and the pencil case J kits very underwhelming. maybe it's my lack of dexterity but the bottles / tubes are very fiddly and prone to spilling / wastage too -- so I basically don't use onboard.

Deodorant, toothbrush and toothpaste are essentials and the products you'd want in an individual bag (as opposed to available in the bathroom) I reckon.

On wastage, I gather Finnair J offers a recycled basic bag, and only has some items in it, with others available on request. Seems a sensible compromise but the downside is probably not something you'd take away with you. Will be travelling in J on Finnair in a couple of months.

BA J is focussed on basically putting pax in and out, without much regard for world best in comfort or so on. People are probably in BA J on an expense account anyway, otherwise previously quite a few Avios burns, so as long as they get some sort of flat seat with a more human meal than Y, they couldn't care more or less.

The amenity kits have gradually gone to reflect this, though I'm not sure what's worse - the current drawstring shoebag, or the older Elemis zip pouch.

Mostly amenity kits of style are going the way of the dodo these days, though it's not a consistent downward trajectory across the globe.

What is interesting is whether people really do keep their kits. I've walked through a cabin at times with even nice mini-Rimowa suitcase style kits have been distributed... and left behind, contents merely ransacked. Finnair must have kind of caught onto this, as their amenity kit container is not intended to be retained (if I remember correctly, unless they have changed). In this case, the accessories have been given for comfort use but not for keepsake.

People may not like the current QF J kits by the Spades, but the male ones make for reliable cases; good for throwing in a few things that need to go with you, cables, adapters or the like. Most women seem to like the Kate Spade bag designs.

Many Business Class cases are getting quite minimal. NH comes to mind, as does UA, though UA changed things up a bit with their metal pencil case style collectable amenity kits.

And of course, no one can forget SQ Business. Often regarded as one of the best Business Class products in the world, with almost no amenity kit to speak of. Yes, there are many amenities available in the bathrooms, usually of acceptable quality....

The focus is certainly weaning off a keepsake and more just some products for you to use, preferably during your flight.

The BA J bags are so bad, my +1 laughed at me for keeping one from a recent flight.
I'm not a big expert on amenity kits and not using any of the products inside (except tooth brush) but I do appreciate a nice looking one like the mini Samsonite or Rimowa.
My +1 uses some kits to store her stuff and I've noticed that from all the fancy ones we collected she uses the Kate Spade bag the most (when I asked what's wrong with the F kits she said they look too old). Go figure...

I am sure SQ has done their market research.

And you know what if amenities kits were fantastic 20 years ago, all good and well, but I would gladly take just about any carriers long haul business class seat today with today's amenities kits (or indeed no amenity kit) over the best amenities kit ever plus the long haul business class seats from 20 years ago....:D

I think that's what it comes down, what's going to influence your choice of carrier? Safety, reliability, scheduling, seating, in flight service, status credits/miles, in flight entertainment, catering, limousine rides to/from airport ..... and coming a distance last for most people would be amenities kit.

I reuse my Kate Spade bag; it's great for long haul Y with some Panadol, lip balm, toothbrush/paste etc in it.

My J VA kit from Born Alchemist-brand days is in my gym bag every day, just enough room for deodorant, razor, gel and some of the many tubes of shampoo & conditioner I've taken from hotels everywhere. The more recent Mandarina Duck sized ones aren't quite big enough.

I totally agree with your +1. The female SKII bags on QF F are horrid. Much preferred the Payot bag and before that the black silk bag with the Georg Jensen discount voucher.

I hadn't experienced anything other than the red SKII bags. I rather thought they could be re-used as a clutch for evenings while travelling, if you were trying to travel lightly!

I always manage to squeeze in at least two extra handbags into my carry on :D

We didn't think much of the amenity kits we picked up from our last QF business class trip at the beginning of the year and tossed them into the spare room when we got back. They're cute and something different from travelling in econo, but the stuff inside is certainly not collectable.

Our dog, on the other hand, got a hold of one the kits (must like the red color) and has adopted it as his chew toy. Strange he didn't go for the United amenity kits we picked up on that trip.....

From an eBay demand point of view, the most desirable amenity bags are those Thai Airways First Class Rimowa bags. I have sold a couple over the time and got $100 a piece for them, however I see other sellers who have no issue listing them for 'buy it now' for upwards to $300! The Thai Airways F Tumi Bags weren't too bad either, upwards of $60-$70 on a good day. I have attempted listing all sorts of travel amenity bags (OZ, LA, QF, BA, BR, KE and more) and you pretty much waste your time, the occasional QF cases sell for a few bucks but that's about it.

I personally find the QF F case pretty good. Empty out the cough, keep the toothpaste, and throw a proper toothbrush, and you're sorted.

I actually use one of the SKII cases as a bag for my travel camera - it just manages to fit the Fujifilm xe2 body, 18-55 zoom lens and 18mm prime. The FAs get a chuckle when they see me unpack it mid-flight.

I'm one who thinks all kits are a waste and just more cough to carry. Put in an amenity bar and let people pick what they want.

Then invest savings into something else nice :)

I'm with you Pauly, had a recent flight on Emirates 10 days ago on two legs Singapore, Dubai, Dusseldorf and neither leg had amenity kits. We flew on points, but no seat we saw had them.

The problem is I have seen full size hand/body moisturisers etc taken from the bathrooms :( So when you board, it's there ..... half way through the flight, its magically disappeared into someone's hand carry.

In business/first class?
