All International Arrivals into Australia to self isolate for 14 days

Just for clarity - how long should the government be allowed to detain you for committing no crime?

So it’s not a leg-pull? 😳

For as long as the law allows. Deal with it. And being detained for health reasons isn’t new ya know?

Sure, vote ‘em out at the next election, but you are talking about each and every federal, state and territory government, members of the National cabinet. Oh, and I think the Oppositions support the current laws, if not advocate stronger 😊

Will you be standing?

So, WA will start charging for the hotels as from midnight and premier said they will be handed a bill as they check out.
I wonder how many will be paying that on the spot.

Really? I have noticed the oppositions of every colour seem to be relatively quiet.... I think they are just sitting back and watching.... seeing how it goes. If it all goes well, then they are fine. But if it all goes to cough? If we see rioting, which is totally in the realm of possibility, if we see scenes of police clashing with tens of thousands of people (and these things can happen - just open a history book) - if we see the governments losing control - then you bet - the opposition will have something to say about it.

While we still live in a society with free speech, let me say this. I hold civil liberties pretty high. In fact, I think they are about the highest you can go. I have a natural distrust of the government, as really anybody with an interest in a democracy should. This very forum is full of pages and pages of comments from people over the years about the general uselessness of the government and its incompetence. But for some reason, we now magically believe and trust in dear leader. Other people, and I have seen this mostly among older people, are happy to roll over whenever the government says boo.

I don't know where you sit on this spectrum, but I respect your apparent faith in the system. I think you should respect those of us that don't trust the system. And when it is all done and dusted, we can see who was right :)

12 months? If it was you? You are happy with that?
I'm calling BS my friend.

Not quite the funniest thing I have read today but it's up there.

Would I enjoy it? Probably not, but I understand the reasoning and have just done that same thing at home for 14 days.

Neither of us went completely mad. o_O 🤡
You do understand being in your own house is quite different to being locked in a hotel room with no windows that open? With police posted outside your door? And I do believe you were allowed to receive deliveries? Even people? Not the case with with the hotel situation, as you would know of course.

But let's hear it from the horse's mouth, shall we? If anyone out there is actually going through the hotel imprisonment thing, please share with us? Don't expect a lot of sympathy from this lot, but I would be keen to hear from you

Bit like a private room in a hospital, without the ventilator perhaps.

While it is good not to blindly accept all Govt directives, it is equally necessary to see the reality in a crisis.

Is this for those who left post Level 4 or in general?

I thought it was being Bipartisan and thinking thank god it isn't us!

The people entrenched in Rottnest Island are laughing. I agree the lack of windows isn't good. But what can be done when people flagrantly flout the law and endanger others. I'd expect that AFFers have all done the right thing but many many others aren't. That's the way the law works.

Call what you like. As I said, “as long as the law allows”. Your resorting to hyperbole makes your argument weaker, if that’s possible.

. But for some reason, we now magically believe and trust in dear leader.

Ah, now it’s clearer what the problem is. Do you know that the current arrangements and laws have come from agreement of the National Cabinet, all Fed, State and Territory governments. Liberal and Labor.? Genuine question. Supported by Federal Opposition and Tas Opposition ( the ones I follow closely), both Labor.

You asked earlier to the effect “where are the lawyers?”. Well, here in Hobart we have one of the most outspoken civil libertarian lawyers in the country, Greg Barnes.

He was interviewed a few nights ago and while not happy, ( impossible), he essentially agreed that the current measures were necessary.

To me that spoke volumes.

I think being locked in a hotel room like a prisoner, for doing NOTHING than merely arriving into your home country is completely outrageous. Undemocratic. My friend is locked away in Melbourne. The "detainment" order is just chilling... shows that the Government can just remove your rights with no questions. Not even any legal oversight. Only permitted to receive 2 packages during the imprisonment - not allowed any alcohol unless they buy from the hotel minibar (outrageous). No exercise permitted. No fresh air. Makes me so mad.

I cannot believe that more people are not kicking up a stink? Where are the lawyers?

Anyway, all I can say to my fellow citizens who are in this horrible position.... don't forget who did this to you when the next election comes around.... do not forget.

Quarantines are not new.

Indeed last year I actually staid for a weekend at the old quarantine station in Manly.

I highly recommend this as a great weekend away when you can travel again.
Amazing history and stunning location.

On the history of the site: Sydney Quarantine Station (Our History)

The practice of quarantine began during the 14th century in an effort to protect coastal cities from plague epidemics. Ships arriving in Venice from infected ports were required to sit at anchor for 40 days before offloading on shore. This practice, called quarantine, was derived from the Italian words quaranta giorni which means “forty days”. From the 1830s until 1984, migrant ships arriving in Sydney with suspected contagious disease stopped inside North head and offloaded passengers and crew into quarantine to protect local residents.

So only 14 days for our modern day quarantiners. They are getting off lightly ;)

Yes Australia tried that.

1/ Way too many like the Aspen Couple were found to still go out as they treated it as optional to stay inside.

2/ To get home, and particularly if interstate is where the home is, you risk infecting others all along the journey. Baggage handlers in SA?

A lot of assumptions here on your behalf. I am not going in for long answers here so work out for yourself what each line is referring to.

The Federal Opposition leader holds a press conference on most days and discusses these things and mostly they are happy.

A certain degree of trust or faith in the system is required. I believe that it's more often incompetence than civil liberties being taken away.

Re being in my own house is better than a hotel. Yes it is though in making that statement once again you are assuming things. Do I live in a one bedroom high-rise without opening windows, or a small house on a small block or a big house on a biggish block. Which ever it is puts a whole different meaning to the self isolation. What other are used to also affects their outlook.

The hotel people have my sympathy however sometimes the greater good is more important. Remember if we over compensate here we have a few annoyed people but if we under compensate then a lot of people will probably die.

Talking of Aspen. Week before last I was walking the beach with a friend when a woman known to my companion mentioned she and her family had just returned from US where they left after only a few days because all resorts were closed. Self-isolation had just come in which left me wondering, did she arrive back on Sunday or did they arrive back Monday or later.

Our 14 days isolation at home went ok with only phone calls to granny, friends and family. It really wasn’t too hard but it sure slows the clock down a bit.
Come over to PERTH after midnight Sunday night (I think) and you might have to pay for two weeks accommodation as our State Government does not want you to come and has put in major travel restrictions for all of us locals with few exemptions.

Its called unity, and its refreshing to see.

I would bet you dollars to doughnuts that 99% of those in forced quarantine would not self isolate correctly. Those %^^%^ people in the immediate past have proven that and have forced the Governments hand.

Also I would bet you the farm, that if your friend was allowed to isolate in Melbourne in his own house you would be the first person to visit him while in isolation, because you believe its your right to do so and the Government has no right to interfere. I apologize if this sounds a bit harsh but I'm not sure that you understand whats at stake.

I suspect 70-80% would. It's always the errant 20% that spoil it.

To put some perspective on things, the 2 weeks in quarantine is probably insignificant compared to the liberties infringed in the name of the "war against terror" !

My daughter has just finished voluntarily self isolating in AMS. Because she is a stickler for doing the right thing she has missed the opportunity to return home. She is stuck in NL but will make the most of it. The Dutch incidentally are now "intelligent isolating".
I disagree with you and believe many people, not AFF'ers of-course, but those others would have a high rate of recalcitrance.
