My Dad's best friend died and Im trying to book a hotel in regional NSW for parents to stay at so they can attend funeral. It is too far to drive there and back in 1 day.

Accor app says no availablity /fully booked but because of my lowly Gold status i can get a guaranteed room.

How does this work?

Will they cancel someone elses booking ? Will it be a problem im not staying?

I dont want there to be issues after a long drive. Thinking perhaps safer to book elsewhere although choices are slim.

Ring the property direct and explain the situation to them.

You cannot use privileges from your account to benefit anyone else whom is not your spouse/partner, even then you must be staying.

Well i was going to book in his name via his QF account but hotel was not showing up. So i checked via my accor app and thats when the room guarantee thing came up which ive not seen before.

Doesnt matter we found another hotel via Qantas Hotels that could confirm booking online so Accor lose business.

Not seeking privilege or benefit, as price with Accor and QF hotels was the same and no welcome drink wanted. Its just my Dad is not tech savvy so wanted me to book for him.

I asked because i would not want someone else to lose their confirmed booking. Seemed strange they could guarantee a room if fully booked, turns me off accor that you could lose a pre-booked/paid room to some last min status holder tbh.

No idea why on a tuesday night in middle of nowhere outside school holidays it would be all booked out. Last year they stayed there for another funeral and it was empty as.

They generally bank on someone cancelling. Of course, that may not happen, and they would have a process to manage the situation (liekly walking someone)

Given that you are the member, then there will likely be problems if you are not there. In this case, you'd be better off looking elsewhere.

I think most of the hotel groups have a room guarantee for higher status holders. Like airlines overbooking, they can count on a certain proportion of cancellations/no shows, and sometimes will bump a non-status guest to an otherwise blocked room if they can (i.e. awaiting repairs or reno, but safe/useable as is), but yes they will also walk non-status guests if need be. At the end of the day, there's more value in retaining the frequent customer.

If they walk someone what is their obligation to find that person alternate accomodation? Imagine driving for a day to middle of no where thinking you had a room only to arrive and be told bad luck.

I think it should be illegal to oversell.

They don’t, as a Hilton Diamond, IHG Diamond, Marriott Gold I don’t get the room guarantee Accor offer Gold and above. It’s not a bad privilege/benefit but some hotels play the game by pricing the rooms for said guarantee at silly prices, often many thousands a night. Most hotels will have a spare room to cater for this, and unexpected room changes when things go wrong, I have not heard of anyone being walked.
