Re: New Virgin Campaign

That she was forced to change how she planned to govern the country when forced into a minority coalition does not mean she is a liar. It means she is a pragmatist who was successfully able to negotiate. This is something that Tony Abbott was not able to do and he has been bitter and twisted ever since.

I believe that this latest piece of filth (probably silently supported by Abbott and co) will harm their chances of being returned at the next election.

Australia desperately needs a future thinking government that plans for longer than the next election cycle. This type of vile commentary by an influential journalist will not help either Australia or the profession of journalism.

She may not have lied at the time of stating "there will be no carbon tax..." however had she stuck to her commitment of that she would not have jumped into bed with the Greens (and the independants) and changed her mind. Abbott was dead right not entertain them in a minority government. we really should have gone back to the polls then and there. But that is beside the point..

Personally I think Alan jones' comments were out of line, there is never a place to joke about ones parents dying. Regardless of political persuasions, sport teams etc.

Re: New Virgin Campaign

Seriously - this country needs to toughen up...

A bit of sledging from a radio host - that's all it was...

I cannot believe how fast this country is trying to pad everything in cotton wool as we march toward a communist state

I disagree with your opinion here.

I believe Alan Jone's diatribe was a vile piece of misogynistic hatred that was deliberately calculated to hurt the Prime Minister in a time of great personal grief.

I'm with Hvr on this.

Also, not real sure how the country is meant to toughen up, as we march toward a communist state, whatever that may be. :)

Re: New Virgin Campaign

Maybe now Sydney will do what the rest of the country has done for ages - ignore everythingAlan Jones says.
Like Melbourne listens to Derryn maybe?:p:shock::p;)

This is so funny.

Re: New Virgin Campaign

Actually he will now appear on some channel seven programmes such as Sunday and Sunrise.

I usually watch News 24 or Sky in the morning. This gives me another reason to do so.

As an aside, does Jones still have his segment on Today in the morning?

Re: New Virgin Campaign

Comments like Jones's makes me wonder when we're going to start seeing groups like the birthers and tea party mob here. Waiting for a conspiracy theory that Gillard is secretly a married, fundamentalist Christian & that's why she doesn't support gay marriage or that Abbott is secretly a closeted gay man born in Kenya. Or something that ridiculous, but mobs of people will believe & vote a particular way, because the media told them so.

Totally agree with this observation. Call people liars, talk about chaff bags and old cows etc, I mean we all expect that from shock jocks and indeed from both side of politics, and maybe we do need to toughen up (or be pragmatic and take it for what is - hot air) , but there are lines that should not be crossed (in public anyway) , and this is probably one of those lines.

Re: New Virgin Campaign

According to an email I have received from senior contact in corporate communications Virgin Australia:

- they have no current commercial relationship with the Alan Jones show
- they have advertised on the Ray Hadley show

Now since Alan Jones is a major shareholder in 2GB he would indirectly benefit.

As a personal viewpoint, it's not about the politics, but the vile conduct of the man which is offensive, not to mention the unethical conduct of both Jones and 2GB in the cash for comment saga.

That said, such angry, ill-informed, offensive comment seems to align with the right side of politics and thereby no surprise when the young University of Sydney liberal Alex Dore decided to invite Jones to the UniSyd Liberals dinner rather than someone with more considered, argued, rational or reasonable things to say.

So you missed the ALPs last election campaign did you?
I love the way(not) that people of the left always complain that the right side of politics is thje major source of personal insults conveniently overlooking the daily outpourings from their own side.
Of course I am biased.I did stand as a Liberal candidate in a federal election. For all those who think the ALP can do no wrong I guess you think death threats against an opposing candidates child is OK.

It is about time all our political parties thought more about policies than the thoroughly overdone denigration of your opponents that passes for politics today.

Re: New Virgin Campaign

Sad sad sad times when companies have to do this

"Virgin Australia currently has no commercial relationship with the Alan Jones programme"

Exactly right!!!

Re: New Virgin Campaign

I am just wondering what ever happened to forgiveness in this country?

Of Jones? Supply is finite, and I think he has exhausted his share. A horrid man, regardless of his politics. ( I have and doubtless will again vote as I feel at a particular election - I have no strong affinity with either side).

Re: New Virgin Campaign

You mean for Alan? The man who apologised (fauxpologused?) for saying that Gillard (among others) should be thrown out to sea in a chaff bag and then had the gall to sign a chaff bag jacket for an auction at the same event where he made these latest disgusting comments? And people are sooking that meanie pants Gillard won't return poor, bullied Jones' calls? I doubt I can express my thoughts without a moderation issue popping up, but let's just say the phrase rhymes with "duck be fed".

Forgiveness has to be earned and shouldn't involve the victim having to flush their dignity and self respect down the toilet as Jones and his equally grubby media mates seem to be demanding. Hopefully this episode will lead to politicians of all sides boycotting 2GB while Jones still has a role there, including giving 2GB reporters the silent treatment at press conferences. At the very least, anyone without the scruples to stay away from Jones will provide me with a very decision as to who belongs at the bottom of my ballot paper.

Jones should count himself lucky that Gillard doesn't have the same attitude to defamation as Hawke, otherwise his financial concerns may go beyond losing a few sponsors. I doubt she would lose a single vote if she decided to take this pathetic excuse of a human to the cleaners.

Re: New Virgin Campaign

... Now since Alan Jones is a major shareholder in 2GB he would indirectly benefit ...

Provided with share options of a 20% stake by John Singleton in 2002 to do his morning show, plus a $ multi-million sign-on fee, plus a $ multi-million salary per year after that.

Could it be some folks are simply disgusted by Alan Jones? Surely there are some Liberal voters out there who find him offensive? Why must someone who finds Alan Jones offensive be from the left? Was Alan Jones a good choice for the Sydney University Liberals as a dinner speaker? Why not choose someone who could debate policy, business, the economy, international relations or something of benefit to the good students and their guests?

Surely the Liberals would be better served by a policy debate (as you seem to suggest) than by association with an ignoramus and the usual fear, uncertainty and doubt fall back position?

It seems also that one Simon Berger, reported as head of government relations at Woolworths was the MC and provided the chaff bag auction item. Woolworths is a sponsor of Alan Jones. It now claims to have ceased that support and suggested Simon Berger was attending in a private capacity.

All seems a bit strange to the the perceptions of ethics of this young gal
